Can’t connect iPad to channels server for remote using tailscale

Remotely connecting channels server

I can use the channels server app to view my Movies and TV shows at home using my internal IP address; now, … I would like to hit the road and share them

I have channels server using Tailscale for “Remote Connectivity” because my TMobile uses CG-NAT which won’t support port 8089 port forwarding

After considerable research I have installed “TailScale” as the alternative in the “Admin” of channels server. I then installed Tailscale on both the windows 11 and IPad Air 5; they show connectivity.

When I connect using “Tailscale” as my IP provider I get an error message that says: “channels is looking for source on local network”

I checked Tailscale and the machine page, “first tab” shows my IP address for both my windows11 used as a server for channels server DVR, and, my iPad Air 5 as connected devices.

I did some searching and it states that I need to add “ :8089 “ at the end of the IP address but that didn’t help

Research showed me how to ping from my IPad and from my windows 11 used as a server and the result show the connections are good

I used PingLite on iPad and CMD on windows!

I checked to see that the playoncloud was working properly and my movies and TV shows are listed in both the C: drive under videos > …playoncloud

And in my external drive listed as D:/

I installed a few times before getting it right in my head

Research stated that I might correct the problem by restarting both the IPad and the channels server machine. It didn’t help

Research said that I should remove the Firewall on the windows 11 acting as server and that was easy enough, but, that was no help

Research suggested that my VPN’s might be malfunctioning so I checked them and Tailscale is handling the VPN with the McAfee virus software is silent unless needed

When clicking on Tailscale on the tool bar on windows using right click I get access to the Exit Nodes and research states that I should check to make sure I have local network access. I checked and it is working

When I check to see which devices are available on the windows tool bar access point for Tailscale it clearly shows my iPad Air 5

I currently think I have exhausted the basics and I might be left with working with the “ACL” which I believe is a type of programming.

I have worked with web, C, JavaScript, Assembly to a small degree; hopefully helpful

I have tried searching for the last couple of weeks using every type of search that I could think of. The AI for google on IPad really makes that helpful.

I have exhausted my questions!!!

Can you advise on what I might try next??

Thank You

Kevin

Don't use the integrated Tailscale on your Channels DVR Server. Disable it.
Also disable your Channels DVR Server Remote Streaming.

Instead, install Tailscale on your Channels DVR Server PC.
To connect this way from a Channels client that has the Tailscale app installed on its device, use the Channels DVR Server PC tailnet IP and the Channels DVR Server port address.
Connect at Home i.e. 100.100.100.100:8089

I use this on my 7 Channels DVR Servers running in docker containers on my Synology NAS to access them using my iPhone running Tailscale for iOS and the Channels for iOS client.

You can't have Tailscale on both the Channels DVR and the host server. If you only want to use Tailscale for Channels DVR, then the check box on the admin page is the easiest way. If you want to use Tailscale to access other services on your network, you will need to look at the options of how to configure it and what's best for your network.

I tried disabling Tailscale and remote in the admin and I still get the message stating that channels is looking for sources.

I am using the IP address Tailscale has assigned for my winChannelsServer
100.79.223.74
From my iPad

Connect>Channels DVR Server>At Home>100.79.223.74:8089

And Morris is saying I can’t have Tailscale checked in the Admin section and also installed on my win machine used as the server for channels?? Is that correct??

So I removed Tailscale APP from the win server machine and tried to connect and it seem to be connecting but it still is looking for sources

I would like to use my iPad to remote view movies on channels server located on my win machine at home..

What would best way to configure Tailscale so that I can use my iPad remotely

Any other ideas would be appreciated
Thank you Kevin

If you're using the Channels DVR built-in Tailscale, you "connect at home" using only the Tailnet IP address and no port# 100.100.100.100

If you're using Tailscale installed on your Channels DVR host PC, you "connect at home" using both the Tailnet IP address and port# 100.100.100.100:8089
Assuming 8089 is your Channels DVR port number. If not, use its port number instead.
No need to enable exit nodes if Tailscale is installed on your Channels DVR host PC.

It does work. I just connected my iPhone over cellular (disabled WiFi) and am streaming a recording in progress from one of my CDVR Servers.

If Tailscale is working, you should be able to bring up Safari on your iPad and go to your Channels DVR web admin UI.
If you're using the Channels DVR built-in Tailscale, go to the Tailnet IP address http://100.100.100.100
If you're using Tailscale installed on your Channels DVR host PC, go to http://100.100.100.100:8089
That will show that Tailscale is working between your iPad and your DVR PC.

Can you post a screenshot of this?
Is your iPad Channels client looking for your server or has it connected to the server and Channels DVR is showing that it's looking for sources?

Were you able to connect from Safari on your iPad to your Channels DVR web admin UI using Tailscale?

Here is the screen shot..

I believe my system is working…
I think that I am looking for sources…

Using Safari on IPad at my apartment I can connect by typing the IP address
IP 100.100.100.100:8089

Screen shot…

I can use the web admin to make the adjustments that I usually make on my win 11 desktop for channels server DVR

Tail scale shows these web addresses

I am using the windvr address without the port 8089 when I connect because my research shows that my obstacle is the TMobile internet device that I am using.

  • T-Mobile Home Internet services use CG-NAT (Carrier-Grade Network Address Translation).

I have been able to find any info that takes me further. The exception is working with the APL….???

Really appreciate the help thank you Kevin

Here are better screen shots of my admin page

Thanx kevin

I have never seen that. What do your Channels DVR Sources look like?

That doesn't look like you were connected via Tailscale, otherwise the url displayed would show your server tailnet IP address 100.125.156.58:8089

As I explained previously, you omit the port only when the Channels DVR Tailscale integration is enabled. When it's disabled and you're using tailscale on your PC you use the tailnet IP address and port 100.125.156.58:8089.

The tailnet IP address is different for the integrated Channels DVR Tailscale and the Tailscale installed on your PC.

It sounds like you're consulting an AI assistant.
Continue if you wish to, but don't mix its recommendations in your help request. Instead, either ask your AI assistant, or ask here.

The scanning for sources should time out. Then you will be asked for an IP to connect to and you need to provide your server's Tailscale IP. Possibly you don't need to wait for it to time out. Try clicking connect and see if it asks for an IP

My mistake…
Screen shot connecting using “I believe Tailscale”

I have tried to. Use a more concise path but It doesn’t seem to want it

Your Channels DVR Server has no sources to record from.
That's what a DVR is for (Digital Video Recorder).
Probably why you're seeing this

You only have local content imports.

You could add Pluto easy to get a source going.

I think I understand where this is going sideways on me.
I really am just figuring out how it all pulls together.

I tried to install HDHomeRun with what I thought was the best antenna for an apartment you can buy, but, the HDHomeRun people told me that the device really wasn’t reliable so I repurchased and rebuilt everything and this time I believe I have everything working.

The point is that in doing all this I understand now exactly what I was doing and what you were saying.

The interface that I am looking at now looks like this:

My Source is HDHomeRun which is giving something to record. I thought source was going to give me the movie files that I already have to show on the road….

This is where I find access to my source

When I select the HDFX at the top of the page I am given a channels selection after going through and marking them first as favorites

All the above gives that recording opportunity located on the menu

My recording

Taking the time to figure out how to create favorites so that my Guide will work was surprisingly difficult; maybe the late hour…

I still have questions on how to get this system ready for the road, but, It is up and running, and what a relief….

Thank You for all your time and effort
Networking terms …. :frowning:
