Today, I received a macOS system notification indicating that channels_dvr was requesting app management access under security and permissions. I’ve never seen this before and wanted to get some background as to why Channels is requesting this permission as it grants access to update or delete other applications…
This is new security reporting in macOS Sequoia. It’s giving the Channels DVR server app permission to update itself, not to update apps from other developers. It’s perfectly safe. And necessary for Channels DVR’s updates, anyway.
Excellent. Thanks so much for the explanation, just wanted to be safe.
Good, Can't blame you for asking.
I'm sure you trust Channels DVR, but were just taken aback by the notification.
I know how it is. Once you say YES, this app can do what it wants, it can (even though you may trust the developers) do all the things you trusted it to do, even some not necessary for its operation.
It's all part of notifying users what resources an app is requesting. Before that, an app could do pretty much what it wanted to without getting approval from the user.
Look at SiliconDust and their iOS HDHR app. They can't even figure out how to make their iOS app ask the user for Local Network access in iOS 18 so it can work with their HDHR tuner on the local network.
