I believe if you join the Android Beta Program then you will only get the Beta version in Play Store. All my Android devices are getting the 4.9.0 released version.
I prefer to run the stable version from the Android TV Playstore then also sideload the beta. I have one station in my market that does something funky that my Nvidia Shield can't handle without severe pixelating, a known bug for years that's been fixed on PC but not on the ancient Shields. This way I can run one instance as hardware decoding and the other instance as software decoding (which fixes the pixelation issue).
I did just look at the Playstore from my Android TV device and I saw no mention of joining the beta, so perhaps @RockandRoller70 did get it accidentally since I saw a post two days ago by @tmm1 saying they released the beta client as stable?

[another edit] I looked at 3 different playstore platforms, Android TV, Android, and PC web browser, the only one that shows me the option to "Join the beta" is on my Android device. Ive seen this issue elsewhere.
I've always had both the regular version and the beta version my Shield.
The Android beta right now seems to be having major issues with the Channels Collections in the On Now screen. It's only noticeable if you change them, but then the tabs disappear. They work fine on the regular version of the app.
I was going to post this in the BETA forum, but I can't create a new topic in there for some reason.
Out of curiosity I went there, and you're right, "New Topic" button is grayed out for me too.
