H.264 and HEVC over ATSC 1.0 observed in Chicago

I have a HDHomeRun Duo deployed in the northern suburbs of Chicago. I recently did a channel scan and saw this in the list:

Anyone care to comment?

48-5\ 1x16 \ 1x16 18.7 ❺ 1080p\ 1x16 DD2.0 \ 16x16 HEVCp\ 1x16 Independent\ 1x16 (Nature scenes)\ 1x16

Interesting, WEIGEL BROADCASTING
Wonder if any ATSC 1.0 TV can decode HEVC (H.265) video?

Becoming more common.

HEVC/H264 decoding is done by the client so any HDHR should work.

I thought HEVC was H.265?

Weigel has been testing this for a while now. It’s actually a really beautiful quality signal and I believe is HDR as well but it’s only broadcasting a very small nature video on a loop

This doesn't look good for ATSC 3.0

I don’t know where I read this but I vaguely remember weigel being one of the first to demo atsc 3.0 like several years ago and not being impressed. I think this is why this channel exists, to prove you don’t need ATSC 3.0 to deliver 1080p signals on ATSC 1.0. I’m probably wrong about that

Here's something on the subject I saw on reddit:

Not a joke: HEVC for UHD over ATSC 1.0

Thought all the media nerds in this sub would appreciate the condensed deck here, detailing my experience getting Ultra HD media shrunken to rates compatible with ATSC 1.0, which means tricky stuff like VBR rate control and getting vendors to rewrite core functionality of their products. If folks are interested in more details, reply with questions in the comments; will update deck with answers.
