Just to add to this thread for others that may be interested. I easily installed OpenVPN as @eric suggested doing on my Chromecast since I already had an OpenVPN service on my network.
The performance is very good and so acceptable using OpenVPN to connect to the Channels server. I do understand that Wireguard is a faster protocol but OpenVPN is working extremely well in my implementation.
