I am attempting to have the audio play through the built in TV speakers via the HDMI cable and to an external AirPlay speaker at the same time. (See the attached image.)
This works perfectly when I stream shows from the Netflix app. When watching a show from the Channels app, the show audio only plays through the Airplay speaker. Navigation sounds play out through both the TV speakers and the AirPlay speaker.
Is there a configuration option within Channels to make this work correctly?
Bumping this up. Hopefully one of the developers can take a look and provide a response.
I tested it again, this time with two AirPlay speakers and the local speakers via HDMI. The audio played through both AirPlay speakers, but not through the local speakers. I then performed the same test with the Netflix, Philo, Prime Video and Plex apps, and they all worked as expected. The only Channels setting I could find within the Channels AppleTV app is for the Audio Driver, which is set to Default.
I repeated the tests on another AppleTV and the results were the same as above.
I am running Channels version 6.3.0 and tvOS version 18.6.
Appreciate any answers that help make this work.
I remember trying this a few years ago and it did work. Unfortunately Apple changes their Audio APIs drastically with every tvOS release, so there's not much we can really do here. It may get fixed by them in a couple months.
Hi @tmm1 - I appreciate the response, and I get that Apple changes their APIs. Your response makes it sound like it is an Apple issue which doesn't explain why the other apps I mentioned are working as expected (unless they all did workarounds, which I can understand if Channels would rather not do a workaround).
I'm not sure. We don't have much visibility into what's happening unfortunately. Other apps may use AVPlayer apis, but our app has to use lower level APIs to support OTA and imported video formats.
tvOS 26 drops soon, you may be pleasantly surprised by how many issues it fixes without any changes to Channels
