What do i install to make my shield a channels DVR. I'am not sure which of the software servers i would install.

Channels DVR Server for the Shield is free.
The standalone Channels app is $25. This is usable for watching live tv without the need of a server.
The Channels DVR version is free and is only usable if you have an active Channels Plus subscription.
This is confusing the way they are named ... You need to differentiate better the non DVR from the DVR.
It is confusing. It would be really helpful if this were clearer.
They are descriptively named.
- Channels, the $25 standalone app that does not require a DVR server
- Channels DVR, the free app that is the same as the paid app, but requires a connection to a Channels DVR server
- Channels DVR Server, the DVR server for running on the Shield. It requires a Channels Plus subscription
The app titles and descriptions seem pretty self explanatory to me.
I don't want to run a server on my Shield, I want to run it as a client only, connecting to a server elsewhere. Which app do I download?
And on my FireTV device, I assume it's equally as simple, as the interfaces are identical?
If you just want just live TV, you use the $25 app. If you want the DVR service, you use the free Channels DVR app

I was able to install the server but now it won't allow me to add my external HDD for DVR. I get permission error.
