Pagination and Settings

First off, excellent work. I really appreciate the themes (now how about the forums?). Thrilled to see continued development. Between this and the new comskip-less commercial detection, I have a lot of testing to do.

My only 2 comments so far:

  1. Is there a reason the Library items need to be paginated?

  2. Could server settings be pulled into the main navigation by status, instead of under the user?

perf, and library sizes. Loading everything in your library would but nuts on the page. I can look into infinite scroll so it paginates for you, but this was the first pass.

There's no plans for that, as they will stay under settings. Don't sleep on the command/control-k Command Palette as it's super useful to jump to places in the site, vs clicking around, if you're a power user.

I'll look at adding some of the bigger destinations nested under Settings, into the Command Palette

I realize these are both personal preference. I do run the 3 other media servers (plex, jellyfin, emby) on my Terramaster/Unraid NAS, and all are able to have the infinite scroll for Movies/TV shows (not episodes). The one thing that has kept me from organizing my movies deeper on Channels is how many pages I have. I'm sure what helps the other media servers is the inline Collections(which would probably help a ton in my case). That shrinks the number of visible items from over 400 to 160. Maybe I'll give the new UI a try for that, but I recall not enjoying that experience.

I don't understand what you mean about inline Collections.

Tell me more about this and your troubles in organizing.

Yes, would love to not have paginated library items. I know other media software manages it in the browser (somehow). Or allow us to manage the number of items per page (with a setting for it to be unlimited), and we can see how it performs on larger libraries.

The latest pre-release should resolve these issues:

Library now uses in line pagination.

Again, start using command-k, it's a life saver. We've also added more top level settings to the command palette to get to them quicker: Live TV Sources, Personal Media Sources, and Client Settings

nice! I missed command-k before. this will be amazing for navigation.

If I am reading what he means by inline collections correctly, in Plex and Emby, if you have movies in a collection there is an option to hide those movies in the general view and show the collection poster instead. It creates less clutter for larger libraries. It is optional because I don't think everyone wants to organize their media that way.

However, since Channels currently doesn't use poster images in the Collections library (for the Collection image itself) it probably wouldn't work since an odd landscape image amongst the regular posters in the Movies library would look kind of odd.

Yeah, we wouldn't do that. Also a lot of other media apps auto create collections, and all they're really doing is adopting collections from TMDB, which to us, aren't collections, they're franchises, which is how we expose them in the tvOS/iOS clients.

We believe collections to be something for you to curate. Additionally movies/shows might be in multiple collections. So collapsing them is probably not something we'd ever do.

We also believe the admin to be just that, and admin, not a client with specific presentation aesthetics. And hiding movies away in an administration actually feels counterproductive.

Yeah, I personally agree with you. If I want to view my Collections, I go to the Collections tab, not scroll through my library.

I also dislike the ability to auto create collections - I tried it in Emby and Plex and it's just wrong. They create all kinds of random collections. I will only create collections if it is 4 or more movies or the different holiday collections (October and Christmas).

Wow! What should my second wish be?

Works great. Zero performance issue, even with the 400+ item movie library.

I agree, I certainly don't want auto collections. Every collection I do curate. It's just besides all of your typical Collections, I have a lot of matched extras, basically documentaries that came with the discs, but they have their own database listing so you can get artwork, usually a little more than a typical deleted scene or featurette. Hart part is, if it's not collapsed into a collection, there's a lot of random documentaries sprinkled in the main library. So I might be down in the T's (which probably formerly page 14) and suddenly I see 6 short docs for Back to the Future. My own cross to bear as the library curator, I understand. If I recall, I think I was trying to recreate all of my collections in Channels, but it may have kept going back to the first page, or I would lose my place. I think I just stuck with some of my larger/visible (MCU/Star Wars) collections so I have 12 instead of 40.

I totally get all that.

One good tip, but this is just for client, is to take those extras and mark them as hidden. Collections will still show them, but they won’t show in your library, thus cleaning up a lot of cruft. This is a great tip for content you ONLY want to see via a collection like say Stand Up specials or old Wrestling events :eyes:.

This won’t, and can’t, happen in the web admin though because if we hid them, you’d never be able to get to them.

As for scrolling a ton to get them into your collections, I think V2 will absolutely improve this for a couple reasons. You can quickly add items to a collection via their context menus now, and those menus are available more places, like rows and the grid. So you no longer have to dive into the content page to manage them this way. Hopefully this saves time, and your place.

Wow, thanks for this tip! I never noticed you could do that (or thought about it as an option).
