QNAP time incorrect after DST change

Monday, March 13th my DVR recording of 24 Legacy was not recorded properly, instead it recorded everything an hour off.

I checked several recordings from Monday and today and nothing recorded properly! Looks like some kind of lame daylight savings bug.

Sounds like the time on your computer/NAS is not correct. What kind of system are you running the DVR on?

QNAP TS-251+
Time set to correct time zone and NTP sync.

Daylights Savings Time bug?

@krblgc saw this earlier too, and is also using a QNAP.

I just checked my QNAP and I see the same problem. The system settings say DST is configured, but it still shows the wrong time over SSH and even in the settings.

I see a similar bug report going all the way back to 2003: https://forum.qnap.com/viewtopic.php?t=72711

Also @jkline reported lots of similar issues with time sync on the QNAP in NTP Server on QNAP borked? Request for info from QNAP owners

I clicked the Update button under NTP server settings, and it reset my time to be correct…

Here’s another more recent thread, with users of Plex DVR reporting they had the same issue: https://forum.qnap.com/viewtopic.php?t=104100

Yeah I see those same bugs… lame. I clicked the “Set the server time the same as your computer time” (aka the “Update” button and it updated but I imagine this just updates to my computer time and doesn’t fix the QNAP time bug…

Maybe you can report to QNAP and it will hold a little more weight?

I can try… we don’t really have any contacts there yet. I will also check with the HDHR and Plex folks, as this bug affects all of us.

BTW, I am running QTS 4.2.3. It looks like QTS 4.2.4 and 4.3.2 are also available now.

I am runnng 4.3.2

Anyway the DVR engine will just record based on the guide? I can clearly see the show is queued for recording and its even highlighted in the guide grid.

I didn’t run into this particular issue during the DST change on my TS-453 Pro. I’m running QTS 4.2.3 Build 20170121.

I’m set to ntp sync from pool.ntp.org every (1) day(s) with the (GMT-05:00) Eastern Time (US & Canada) timezone specified. DST is also set to adjust the system time automatically for daylight saving time and it lists the correct dates on which to change the time (2017/03/12 and 2017/11/05).

I noticed in the screen shot above that the time interval is set to 7 days. Is it possible it hasn’t checked in with the time server to adjust the system time automatically (even though the DST page lists the correct date/time)?

I asked on the HDHR forum and got some similar reports as well: https://forum.silicondust.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=119&t=31745&p=290648#p290640

I guess the default 7 day NTP sync makes no sense and setting it to 1 day is the best solution so far. Thanks @jbrou098

There is no way to build a DVR without an accurate clock. The DVR doesn’t know when to start recording because it doesn’t know where in the guide it is.

The reason the guide looks correct on ATV and web UI is because it’s using the clock time from the ATV and computer browser for display.

I just updated my settings to have NTP sync every 6 hours:

Still makes no sense that an NTP sync is required to fix the time, when the QNAP clearly knows when DST starts and how much to offset the time by.

Yeah I agree it makes no sense. I switched mine to manual thinking the bug may be in the ntp sync. We will see.

Agreed. The time should set whenever it thinks it 2am, and the sync should only make 2am more accurate.
