I am an xfinity internet customer and because of this, i have a limited amount of data that i can use, and if i go above that amount i get charged extra, and the more data i use the larger the bill becomes with pretty much no limit, and although xfinity provides a plan for unlimited bandwith i cannot afford it, because of this i have to constantly ljmit what me and other users can record and sometimes even stream, however when i login to the xfinity hotspot that they provide i can use whatever amount of data i want and there is pretty much no differencs un speed or quality, but i dont know how to switch the channels settings to work with xfinitt hotspot, when i disconnect from my ethernet connection and comnect to the hotspot i simply have no connection to my channelsdvr server but i can browse other websites and download anything without any problems, is there any way to get channels to work with the xfinity hotspot. Or even better is there anyway to be able to switch connection between my home connection and the hotspot whenever i want?
I use a beelink minipc s12, running ubuntu, thanks in advance
Wow this sounds like a nightmare. Can you not switch to a HDHomerun and antenna so you can watch and record live local TV that doesn’t use any bandwidth/streaming?
As fast as getting it to connect with your hotspot — do a search for threads here about “Tailscale.” I think that’ll help you out, by the way you described the problem.
Comcast used to not enforce its stupid 1.2TB limit (whatever it is).
Xfinity hotspot is open wifi. It has a captive portal to login, but it is not a "local" connection type.
You can not use at as a local network. Every device that connects to the public hotspot gets its own address and is not able to talk to each other for security purposes.
There may be a way to make this kinda thing work, using vpn like taliscale, but that would be a much more complex, and ultimately, unsupported setup.
Depends on what he's running his Channels DVR Server on.
You can connect a Windows device to the xfinitywifi on your Xfinity Gateway/Modem Connect a Windows 10 or 11 device to Xfinity WiFi - Xfinity Support
You can connect a Mac OS device to the xfinitywifi on your Xfinity Gateway/Modem Connect a Mac OS X device to Xfinity WiFi - Xfinity Support
One option is to use a router that supports WISP mode. The router will use the hotspot as its wan but also create a lan network that uses that connection. Here is a cheap one for $30. Here
i searched tailscale but the results where literally endless could you lead me to something specific please?
I’m no expert and I’m using it differently from you, but here is where I learned about it:
It works around CGNAT issues with TMobile hotspots, at least.
Idk if this would work. But what about something like Connectify.
Years ago I used to use connectify to automatically pickup my phone and my wife phone and feed that into our home router for wifi. Its not a ideal solution. But i n think it might work.
PC picks up wifi. Is able to do web portal login. Then feeds that connection out to your router.
I am 100% positive there has to be better ways. But this is very easy for non-technical.
