Remote connections failing this morning

ping with just the hostname (xxx.channelsdvr.net) and no port on the end or http in front.

It sounds like there's some crazy firewall on the router preventing access, or the local DNS server is not working.

yes that worked, got a response on that ping.

Okay that means DNS is fine, and its a firewall preventing connections for some reason.

I just plugged this PC directly into the cable modem and it's being fed a public IP address. This pc can no longer ping that domain.

Windows since 8.1 (I believe) has a nice powershell cmdlet that may come in handy when troubleshooting this kind of issue if you have a windows machine. It’s called “test-net connection”. You could run “test-netconnection my.channelsdvr.net -port 8089” and it will give lots of details including if the port is listening or not. Thought it might be helpful.

I think we've established the server is running fine. How do I run that windows command on a firestick? I'm confused.

You can’t, but you mentioned you had a windows laptop as well. It would help identify if there might be a firewall on the network you’re connected to causing a problem.

I have a Windows 7 laptop, would that be okay?

I don’t think the command exists in the version of powershell that ships with Windows 7. However, you can download a newer version and install it for free. Google search for “powershell 5 download” and I think you’ll find it.

It appears that the ISP is blocking outgoing connection requests to the 8089 port from this remote access point. How do I change the DVR Server's broadcast port?

You would need to setup a manual port forwarding rule on your router using external port 8090 (or whatever you want) and internal port 8089

Then try my.channelsdvr.net and change the port at the end to see if it works.

If it does, then during android TV remote connect you can do the same thing by adding &port=8090 at the end of the url once you load the authentication link

I spoke to the ISP and there is no blocking occurring, except what their own wifi router may have been doing, so I purchased a new router, and remote clients still can't connect from this broadband Internet location. I have submitted logs from each remote firestick client when they confirm that they have been authenticated, but still fail to make a successful connection. Any help would be much appreciated.

Try stop/restart the app (or reboot the fire stick)

Yeah, I probably did that a hundred times over the past 7 days that it hasn't been working. When I submitted the data, what did it show?

Just to be clear, I pulled the power plug on the firesticks many times. I uninstalled the client app, then reinstalled it ... many times.

The log shows it is able to connect to the remote server, with no errors like before. It is unclear from the logs where it is getting stuck. The UI should update.

What do you see after a restart of the app? Is it making you reconnect each time?
