Hi, I have a 2 month old Synology DS918+ NAS with 2TB Usable storage. I use the NAS for ONLY Channels DVR. I have 73 recordings and just about all are 1 hour long. Lets assume each recording is 5GB. 73 x 5GB = 365GB. Why is chaannels DVR telling me I am at 98% capacity if I have 2TB usable storage? Synology console also says I'm at 98%.
Thanks,
Rob
If you want a point of comparison, I have a 10TB external drive dedicated to Channels DVR and it currently has 1,006 recordings and is using 12.6%.
Do you have a quota set on your folder? Example: I have 8 TB of storage on my Synology but I have a 3 TB quota on my Video folder to make sure it doesn't chew up too much space.
And other things to consider:
- Channels has a Recycle Bin
- Depending on your configuration, your Synology folder might have it's own Recycle bin (Called #recycle)
- Do you have versioning turned on using Cloud Station Server (or some other method)?
- What RAID type are you using? Are you reducing your space due to redundancy?
Thanks to all for the replies. I don't have any quotas set on the Channels folder. I have the NAS set to the raid that can withstand the failure of 1 drive (My synology NAS is a 2 drive system). I have two 2 TB drive with raid that give me 2TB usable. In the database folder there are 30 folders that look to be daily backups. is that right? I have a feeling that something is not set properly either in the Channels software of the Synology NAS (didn't think I needed to be a NAS expert to run channels as the only app on the NAS)...
Did you check the Channels DVR trash bin ? If you go into recordings check the trash there.
yes, emptying the trash bin has negligible results. I just emptied it (had 12 recordings). Didn't move the needle..
Use File Station to examine the folder sizes (right click properties)
this is weird. I looked at the size of the Channels DVR folder and it says its 286 GB (what I expect), yet Channels DVR says its at 98% (with 2 TB usable).
Did you empty the Synology Recycle bin on the shared folder DVR_Channels?
I did a right click on properties and it all adds up to 286 GB, something is hidden somewhere.
Can you submit diagnostics from the DVR. Maybe it's not reading the disk size correctly
That screen shot looks like it is from Control Panel > Shared Folder. What other folders do you have there, and how much space are they using?
Another thing to consider maybe is that you have set up a quota not at the folder level but at the user level. Go into Control Panel > User and click Edit to see if you have quotas set up there.
Problem solved. Self inflicted.... I'm a former Tivo user. One use case I need is the ability to download content for offline viewing. So I stumbled on a Synology NAS application called "Synology Drive". Its a file sync and share app that works like dropbox. I guess I shared the entire DVR folder and that Synology Drive app creates 32 versions for some reason. Yes I was able to get the one show I care about on by phone, but since I told the Synology Drive app to sync the entire Channels DVR folder, and it did this 32 version thing, that's how all the data piled up. I figured this all out by opening a support case w Synology and they advised me on how to go into the command line interface of the Synology and run some commands that revealed that "Synology Drive" was taking up 1.5TB of my ~2TB usable. I deleted the Synology Drive Database and un-installed the package and now I'm down to a normal data usage. Thanks all for replying. Now if anyone knows if an easy way to download offline content to my smartphone I'd live to hear it. I can use VLC player and can play a Channels DVR recorded show on my phone, but I can't download it for offline viewing. Thanks.
If you find an easy way to do this please let me know. As a work around I use mcebuddy to move 1 show nightly to a folder and run a plex server just to sync that folder to my phone. I would love a better way.
Synology's DS File allows you to access your NAS, and you can mark certain files for offline availability.
Thanks. I'll give this a try!
I'm waiting for the next version of VLC for iOS (3.3.0) which allows downloading using SMB.
Currently if you click a video on an SMB share it streams instead of downloading.
I download my Recordings folder using FileBrowser for Business which has easy Synch facility. Then play offline in VLC Through FileBrowser
