@jsfullam I'm giving my Shield like one last chance. Have you ever run into a problem where you're playing a live show, go to the home screen, go back to Channels, and you just get a black screen?
I don't think that I have noted that exact behavior. That's not to say that my Shield wouldn't act like that. I rarely watch anything live. When I do, I usually back out to the guide before I exit to the Shield home page. We're into our evening classic movie routine now. If we take a viewing break, I can try to replicate the scenario on our Shield.
Does it go black like the DVR software is running and stuck on a blank screen? Could it be an HDMI handshake error when switching from home page to the DVR app? You might try a new HDMI cable...
As I have noted before, I learned the hard way to always check the cable first.
Yeah, I tried another HDMI cable. Wasn't doing it.
I'm wondering if it was Dolby Audio processing accidentally being on. I know that causes issues.
I don't know much about that. I rarely change any audio settings. I'm a "set it and forget it" guy. Does your Shield feed directly into your TV set? Or, does it pass through an AV receiver?
No it's going into an AVR and that setting should have been off. I don't know why it was on.
And I think that was it because ever since I shut it off, it hasn't given me that black screen and considering that's not happening to anyone else but me, that's probably what it was. I love my Shield, but damn, it's a finicky device.
In my experience, AV receivers are the more finicky component. Especially if you are combining several source devices of different technological vintages. I have spent years fiddling around with the connections behind our equipment getting the old and the new to communicate properly. I still have devices hooked up with component video, coax and optical audio, and basic RCA white/red/yellow AV cables. I never let go of devices unless they are decidedly and absolutely dead. There's always a way to make them work. It just takes a lot of head scratching, fiddling, and cussing.
Yeah, it's not the AVR. I plugged it right into the TV and did the same thing. So this is when I definitely give up. I have tried every combination of settings. It doesn't buffer anymore, but when going to the home screen and going back into the app, sometimes it just does not load.
I'll put my Shield through some testing today to see if I can replicate the problem you describe. If the problem is happening when going out and back into the Channels app, it may be something related to one of the recent updates. There have been several lately. Does anything in the Channels log indicate a problem? Have you tried switching to the stable release, rather than using the latest pre-release?
Well, I tried the stable release and the pre-release, and I also found some weird stuff in ADB Logcat that I shared in a dedicated post to make it a little less confusing. It's kind of a different issue, so I didn't want to continue the conversation here and be confusing. I figured it needs its own thread, because it seems to be a crash bug, from what I can tell based on the logs I'm reading.
