Starting Over

For years I have had my DVR installed on a Synology 920+, via container manager using a docker yml. I just moved cities and wanted to start fresh with my server. Is it better to just keep using the Container Manager install or install Portainer on my Synology and go from there? I plan on managing Plex, PiHole, and Channels DVR in one centralized location.

I would suggest using container manager.
Any reason for not using the native package?
i've ben using the package for a while and it works great on my Synology.

Honestly, I prefer the Container Manager but I wasn't sure if Portainer is better to manage?

In my experience, i like tiehr container manager or using the command line.
I did look at Portainer and it looks good but i'm used to container manager.
If i need to upgrade a docker, i will either process the update through container manager or i will pull the new image using command line and stp my docker, duplicate the settings and delete the container and update my new version and start the docker.

Portainer is a much more capable (and powerful) way to manage Docker containers. It also works everywhere you can install Docker, so skills learned work elsewhere -- not just on the one platform.

Would you recommend any tutorials to install channels on portainer?

When it comes to Channels DVR itself, installing it as package tends to be preferred over installation as a container. This is particularly true if you plan to use TVE.

Better using a container for TVE on a Synology NAS.
I used to run the native package install and had too many issues with TVE that way.

Really. I stand corrected then. I thought containers used Chromium and the package used Chrome, and that Chrome had fewer issues.

I'll be using TVE, portainer or container manager install then? I plan to use Olivetin with it as well.

There is no Chrome on a Synology, the Channels Synology package and the container both supply their own headless-chrome.

I find Portainer better at managing containers. You can use either or both.
If you use Portainer you can take advantage of everything @bnhf offers with Olive Tin.

If you use Portainer and Olive Tin, it has a One-Click install to install Channels DVR in a container.

I got Portainer loaded up, how can I do the One-Click install?

It will replace your existing Channels DVR container, so do some pre-planning to make sure you can migrate Channels DVR to the new install, or figure out how to use the same directory path for the recording so you don't have to migrate.

You install Olive Tin for Channels and make sure it's installed and setup properly.
Then you run the Olive Tin One-Click action which creates a Channels DVR container.

I would recommend planning ahead what you need to do, but once you have Olive Tin installed properly, you can install any other containers it supports through One-Click.

I'll leave it up to the expert to guide you

Any clue as to what I am doing wrong here?

On the image line replace latest with tve
