Stuttering Video/Buffering w/ Virtual Channels

This issue started fairly recently for me. This is hosted on a Synology RS1221+ w/ 32GB RAM and 10gig networking. We have Apple TV 4k’s on all of our TV’s and the issue persists on all. My kids watch mostly Virtual Channels where the media is stored locally on the Synology, lately the video will get choppy/stutter, audio remains fine.

I just found the integrated speed test and that’s where I discovered what I believe to be the issue. It returns a <1ms ping, 2~Mbps down, and 948~Mbps up.

Thinking this may be a network or hardware/cabling issue I ran an external Speedtest with the Speedtest app, and here am getting a full 940~Mbps up/down.

I’m wondering if anyone else has experienced this, or if there are additional troubleshooting steps I can try.

I’ve also uninstalled the channels app on the Apple TV, rebooted, and reinstalled. In addition I’ve verified the channels server app is up to date and even preformed a full reboot of the NAS.

Appreciate any assistance.

Thanks,
Austin B

I have a lot of networking experience but zero experience with NAS so hopefully someone else that knows more than myself can chime in as well.

Speaking from a networking perspective, 2Mbit down means that your NAS is only able to send data to the Channels client at that speed. I would 100% say that you have a networking issue. The speedtest to an external source being normal only proves that the AppleTV has zero issues to the internet speed site and that it is most likely not the issue.

You have some sort of networking issue present on your NAS. Beyond that I can't offer any advice.

Thanks for the reply. Here are some other things I've tested leading me to believe networking on the NAS itself is okay. Plex, will stream the same media to the same AppleTV's at 31.2Mbps. I also host an OpenSpeed Test server on this NAS and am able to get 9800Mbps up/down. I am also able to transfer files at full 10gig speeds to/from my PC.

I have no firewall or networking rules in place on the NAS itself, and both the NAS and Apple TV's are on the same VLAN/subnet on my home network. This seems to only affect the Channels app.

Container networking on the NAS? Have you tried the speedtest on a of your apple tvs and gotten the same result?

Think there's still an issue with the Channels speedtest download speed
