You're right, they just upped it from $20... Still a huge savings from what I was paying. And the user experience through Channels is better than with Dish. Win win
$25 only for new subscribers. $20/mo folks (like me) can keep their package and rate unchanged as long as they don't cancel the service.
That would be a violation of the law and FCC licenses. The main channels for broadcast cannot be paywalled. Don't forget that the airwaves are only leased from the government; they are not owned by the broadcasters. With that come a lot of expectations. I suppose the FCC and Congress can always change their mind about this, but free open airwaves has been considered a public good and need for a century and I cannot see that changing anytime soon.
The sub-channels could be paywalled, but who is going to pay extra money for Bounce and Comet? Maintaining open access to those channels is in the interest of the broadcasters because--unlike the main channels--they do make most of their money from advertisement instead of rebroadcast fees. More likely it will be additional channels that are currently on cable that might be paywalled. Consider your local ABC affiliate having sub-channels for the ESPN family of networks.
Check out Antenna Man on YouTube. He has a ton of good info and insight into all of this.
Currently.
I don't think the era of free TV will end, but I do believe the era of being able to record what you want on just any old DVR you want will.
And I'm guessing the DVRs that will be available, if any, will be restricted by licensing agreements to prohibit commercial skip--or even fast-forwarding past them manually.
I'm sure like any good company. They'll offer a way to skip, for a fee.
And $16 for older subscribers, on the original base plan. I believe Spectrum still offers a similar package for $15
Not only thatâŚAT&T actually has the Locast app on their boxes now and Xfinity is starting to do the same.
Cable and satellite already allow this on their DVR. They would be fools to make you lay for it.
I used Locast for local channels...anybody have any suggestions on how I can get them now? Certain providers like ABC don't stream in Atlanta through their app or TVE.
Same with CBS in the Atlanta area.
I live in the Atlanta area and can get most channels with a antenna. NBC is not very good though.
Depending on what you want CBS or NBC for, you could always get Paramount+ and/or Peacock both for less than $12 and Paramount+ has a local CBS feed. And, I just read the Peacock app will be streaming all Saturday night NFL games this season. with those apps you can watch current shows the next day after they air.
But then I would have to use the Peacock app or Paramount+? I was trying to find a TVE solution so I could just use the one app, Channels, to stream everything.
what are you doing for ABC?
I get ABC through TVE provided by DirecTV Stream, I mean AT&T TV Now, I mean DirecTV Now. Oh never mind. LOL!
But sadly they donât have CBS in Atlanta area for whatever reason.
You could get ABC and FOX shows in Hulu the next day. It's true you'd have to use separate apps but you could get Paramount+, Hulu, and Peacock all for less than $20 a month. Unfortunately it would cost much more to get live feeds for ABC and FOX.
I know this is a far out idea. But, I wonder if someone could reach out to Locast and ask to take over their local equipment and broadcast the networks to everyone in the community for free. That would follow the judge's ruling exactly. You're making no profit and you're not expanding outside your local market. I'm sure the cost is a lot considering rental space for the antennas and maintenance but it's a thought.
Nothing much. Probably got lucky. I just hooked a cheap antenna up to my HD Homerun and tossed it on the couch. Not a permanent solution; my wife will assure you. But ABC is coming in fine from the Gainesville area.
I wouldnât be surprised if that happened one way or another. I get my electricity from a electric cooperative. They charge us a rate and I usually get a small check back each year to credit back the excess. Seems something like that would satisfy the law. I bet AT&T would be happy to make donations for expansion. Broadcasters need to be forced to find other ways to make money apart from government regulatory welfare.
