2024 Super Bowl (CBS/Paramount+)

https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/2024-super-bowl-how-to-watch-super-bowl-lviii-in-hdr-and-4k-on-cbs/

According to CBS they will be broadcasting/streaming this year's super bowl in 4K HDR. From other sources it appears this is similar to Fox's method of upscaling 1080p HDR (which is still quite nice looking).

I'm aware of the methods of getting Fox's 4K streams through Channels but is there a way to get CBS? Will it just work on TVE with the "Stream 4K and HDR via TV Everywhere" option enabled?

Too early to tell.

I would suspect providers with 4K now would have this available to them, possibly additionally paramount +.

TVE? I would have my doubts.

It's more possible that this will be on Paramount+...and if so you could just use the EPlusTV tool to pipe it in if you want.

I can't see this being on TVE CBS...

Oh, I wasn't aware that EPlusTV had Paramount+ streaming now. I'll look into that, thanks!

Perhaps a dumb question…

From what I’ve seen, the 4k SB broadcasts will just be 1080p upscaled to 4k. Not native 4k. Is that really going to be any better than tuning into the 1080p broadcast and letting my 4k TV do the scaling? If it’s because 4k implies higher bitrate, why don’t they just bump the bitrate of the 1080 broadcast?

It's also available in 4K using the Fubo TV project (if you have Fubo or want to trial it)

The CBS network feed ingested by local stations is 1080i SDR. Any affiliates that convert their ATSC 3.0 channel to "1080p faux-HDR" will still be ingesting that 1080i SDR feed.

The "4K HDR" feed that participating MVPDs like DIRECTV, Dish, Verizon FiOS, Optimum and Fubo will be using originates as 1080p HDR and is upscaled to 4K by the network before they ingest it.

I am getting segment time outs on 6003 today. I can re-detect the channel on TV-E using my DirecTV credentials and I can watch at CBS Live TV Stream

Reporting about streaming the Super Bowl has been all over the place. The latest report I read stated that you can watch it on CBS or Paramount+, but streaming from CBS' website and app would not carry the game. (That doesn't sound correct to me, so the TVE stream may broadcast the game.)

As far as the (upscaled) 4K broadcast, that will only be available from (v)MVPDs, such as cable, DirecTV, Fubo, YTTV, etc. The stream on Paramount+ will only be 1080p.

Edit: I can currently watch the pregame via TVE in Channels, so there is hope that the game itself will be broadcast, too.

Edit 2: The game itself seems to be streaming via TVE without issue, too.

Recording in 4k with the Fubo TV Project Fubo TV project - #366 by chDVRuser

Recording from FiOS 4K channel. It looks noticeably better than std 1080i. Whether all shots are 4K is probably an NBC secret, I bet there are at least some that are not upscaled. Here is the stats I just captured. Yeah I know it doesn't prove anything about the source. But CDVR is recording and displaying via the AppleTV 4K on the Samsung 70" very cleanly and I'm certain the colors are better, maybe the HDR. (Sorry about the bg image :grinning: - color not representative, took it with the crappy iPad camera)

CBS secret

So tried using the 4K Feed from Fubo TV project pushed through Channels and then to my client TV and noticed the screen was darker than my ATSC 1.0 broadcast reception through the HDHomerun tuner. I tried to use the vivid colors for the 4K feed from the TVs setting and that helped except James Brown skin looked like wax. Ended up just watching the ATSC1.0 version, but wondering if others had similar experience and/or suggestions on how to address in the future?

TIA.

I also used the 4k feed from Fubo TV Project. The picture was darker when compared to the TVE and ATSC1.0 feeds. The most noticeable difference for me was with commercials.
