Do you have to pay for iPhone iPad app if already have Apple TV Channels app ?
Can you set recordings on the iPhone app away from home which will play on the Apple TV app ?
Can you save recordings to a folder that Plex is watching and view them from Plex ?

  1. Yes you currently have to pay for the IOS app separate from TVOS.

  2. You can’t currently do it through the iOS app, although I am hopeful that this is an upcoming feature. The iOS app is not complete on its support for the DVR.

It can be done via a web interface on mobile though, as well as viewing live/recorded.

  1. Yes, the files are plex compatible.

  1. Yes, you have to pay for both if you want to watch on iPhone/iPad with the app and on the Apple TV.
  2. You can’t use the iPhone app (there’s no DVR support for the iPhone/iPad app yet but they’re working on it) but you can use Safari and just navigate to Your_IP:8089 to schedule or watch recordings (and live tv) while you’re out of the house.
  3. Yup, I do this since Channels is running on something that can’t transcode very well. Channels can do it’s own transcoding though, so if you’re running it on the same thing as Plex it’s better to just use the Channels webpage to watch your recordings since you get comskip but you won’t get comskip with Plex.

Thanks guys
I am currently using the plain Channels app
What extra tabs do you get with the DVR - you obviously get a recordings tab but do you get recommendations like plex DVR and full database info and can you search recordings as well ?

On the web interface you get three tabs underneath ‘Search’ with recommendations/things you might want: ‘New Shows/Seasons’, ‘Recommended Shows’, and ‘Upcoming Movies’. You can also search up to 2 weeks out.

On the apps for tvOS/iOS yo get a Recordings tab where all your DVR’d episodes/movies are. Then there’s the DVR tab that shows you what’s scheduled to record, and where you can search to add new stuff, or modify the passes you’ve already created.

It’s very well done, and my family likes it above everything else including TiVo and Plex that we’ve tried. Even my relatives were all down this last weekend for July 4th and loved it and said they wish they had it.
