4K HEVC being recorded as 1080i

Hi,

I may be completely misinterpreting what I'm seeing but the appearance is that Channels DVR is recording a 4K HEVC channel in 1080i instead. Screenshots are from my wife's recording.

My understanding was that HEVC channels would record in HEVC even if the content they air is not originally shot in HEVC. Can someone please clarify for me?

Thanks,
Joey

HEVC doesn't mean 4K. There are no 4K broadcasts yet.

Recordings are made in whatever original format is coming through your tuner.

The tags in your screenshot come from the guide data and do not represent the recording itself.

Ah ok. That was my error. Wikipedia has this to say too: 1080i

To find out the exact details of your recorded video, find it in your Channels DVR Server web admin, and use the View Details. It will show you its exact format, resolution, and bitrate.

And like @tmm1 mentioned, Channels records n the format it receives. There’s no post processing happening.

This! This is why I was confused. I'm not transcoding. Well, that and the fact that ATSC 3.0 has been publicized everywhere here.

Thanks for the tip on View Details.

Basically everything you’ve read about ATSC 3 does not exist. At most they are now broadcasting with a newer codec (hevc) in 1080p (instead of interlaced).

The rest has not been implemented. ATSC 3 is at best in Alpha, it’s not a real thing yet. It’s nothing but engineers testing.

It’s also important to remember that there’s no 4K broadcasts because there’s no 4K content. Networks are not producing nor distributing in 4K and there’s zero news from them that they’ll be doing it anytime soon.

This is indeed the best way to summarize the current situation with ATSC 3.0. :+1:
