Not to mention, user profiles for personalized watch lists on the household TV is far from an "antiquated habit from the past." It's the absence of one that makes CDVR feel a bit dated. And of course any feature like this would be optional.
Antiquated ??? every major Streaming Service has profiles and the option to use pin numbers.
How would this work when a recording is scheduled by the administrator, or a new movie file is imported? Would that new media be accessible to all users by default, or would the admin have to identify which user has access to which recordings, on a per-media file basis? What if a parent has a rated R movie that only 2 out of 4 users should be able to access?
I'm not familiar with how other software handles multiple accounts.
Nothing is being addressed as far as access to recordings ... All I care about is Watched State and up next if you want something else see the first post and vote....
As far as I see it all passes are available to all users, and they can add passes. All recordings are available to all users unless they are using a kid's profile.
Plex and Emby/Jellyfin support User Profiles.
It is pretty self-explanatory for the most part, the topic of a user wanting such a feature, call it whatever you want.
I totally agree. These are good ideas, but please make this OPTIONAL for simplicity.
Just to be clear, on netflix we have 5 user profiles, it works fantastic this way for household management.
On Amazon prime, Im the only one using it.. its very KLUNKY for instance on the apple tv to go from the apple tv app to continue watching a title on amazon and have to select myself when Im the only one using the service.
So Im echoing @DetroitTV here to have logic in the interface to hide the user profiles if so desired.
For Other:
- Personalised Channel Collections
- Personalised Virtual Channels
- Personalised Favourites
I know some of the above can be set via client policy, but this needs to be user policy, not device policy.
Great news if this finally happens!
MOST IMPORTANT
-Seperate Watch State
-Seperate Up Next
MEDIUM IMPORTANCE
-On Later
LEAST IMPORTANT
-Trash
-Storage
-Passes
-Password
Shared Devices = TV
Own Device = Phone
So to make matters more difficult the answer is sinply yes.
-If only 1 user/Profile Auto use profile so no password or pin is required
-If multiple users, a user selection screen with ability to enable or disable 4 digit pin for user switching. I see the value of Pin code to switch profiles. Though I would prefer no pin code/password. So ideally that feature could be toggled on/off
Edit:
@tmm1
Thank you for asking for clarification on a long standing community desire. The Devs involvement with community really helps. And merry Christmas
That is how NETFLIX and other Streaming Services do it ... My profile on NETFLIX has a Pin ... I have a guest profile that does not have a pin also a user profile that does not.
Emby/Plex I have a pin on my profile.
In my family we share devices. Not only do we need each family member to have a unique experience that recognises there state across devices, there are many features that are only implemented in the web GUI and they need to come down to the devices so that everyone can have the full experience without web GUI access. Possibly you could launch the web GUI from inside the app(s).
Can't believe this thread made it this far, and not one mention of credentials!
I don't want my kids to know my channels forum password if they don't need to.
I just looked on a client and I didn't find where you can see the account credentials.
Did I miss anything?
The WebPage is what needs credentials because anyone with access to the web page can cancel your subscriptions etc ... there is absolutely no security when using the web page.
Good point there.
In my family, nobody knows anything about the server.
In fact, they don't know how Channels works at all.
But I can see how this could be a problem if somebody managed to load the web page, indeed.
You can just google it ....
Agreed. Very valid point.
I remember that was discussed before.
Having said that, it's already a potential problem now so it's not a new issue that would be introduced if family member accounts/profiles were created.
If somebody in my family starts messing with the server, they will see a side of me that they have never seen before and that won't be pretty.
Watch State is #1 for me.. With my kids at school, they watch some shows we watch, so it is difficult to manage who watched what or where they are at. I have been using Emby to handle it on my end.
Along with that would be having some type of tracking for deletion, there are some shows that we watch and delete, so some logic around that would help too
That is what I use do not use Channels UI to watch any recorded shows.
Same - should write up a list of what keeps me using plex for my own library instead of channels - channels is extraordinary for live but there are so many changes necessary for recorded/imported
If I could get everyone in my family on board with that it would be great. I like the user added Com Skip in Emby, being automatic. Emby has its issues with tvOS, but I normally use the Channels UI
