About family member accounts

A lot of people have mentioned something like this:

I'm just curious.. what does this actually mean. What are the most important features you are looking for.

I want my family member to have separate:
  • watch state
  • recording passes
  • recording storage directory
  • Up Next
  • On Later
  • Trash
  • other

For me ... Mostly watch State and up next ... the passes should be the same across all users.... Users should be allowed to add passes but they should share the same pass pool.

Do you expect that family members generally use shared devices, and will be flipping back and forth between accounts?

Or does each member typically have their own TV/tablet and it is locked to their account?

The administrator like myself will add users with passwords to whomever ... they will be able to login to any device with the username and pwd.... and get their watch status and up next.... which should follow the user name... not the device.

Our big screen TV is a shared device. Our other two TVs are mostly used only by one person, but not always, and sometimes there is confusion as a result. We seldom watch on smaller devices.

If passwords are implemented please have an option to disable passwords. Nothing worse than inputting passwords on a streaming device keyboard. Its TV not a nuclear football.

A simple remember me will suffice ... if no PWDS any user would be able to login to any device with your username and completely watch shows you have in progress.

Haha really you need that level of security between your family members?

Yeah I use EMBY was watching Beetle Juice 2 ... left myself logged on .... someone watched it using my login and it was removed from continue watching.

This is my continue watching on EMBY .... I watch several shows depending on my mood.... ALL recorded using Channels DVR of course.

Nearly no app requires a password to change profiles. Netflix, prime video, Disney +, Max, ect.

I don’t really care if passwords are available I just don’t want to be forced to use them.

100% agreed.

I will add Trash. More on this later after I answer other questions.

Yes.

The same way it works with Netflix, Hulu, etc.

Yes.

Mostly TV in my situation. There are 5 adults in my family. Sometimes we watch something together but other times, when people are in their own rooms, they watch on their own TVs.

Now, about the Trash...

I was thinking something like this:

  • one person marks a program for deletion
  • this program becomes hidden from the library for this one person and is placed in a trash associated with this person (same as the current behavior but each person has a personal trash)
  • same behavior for other people
  • if it happens that everybody in the family has "deleted" the same program, it will get deleted from the disk after the defined retention period

I also selected "Other" in my vote but now I don't remember why.
When that comes back to me, I will post about it.

My vote is to duplicate what Emby does.

Netlix I have Pin numbers on profiles in my household.... It is optional. I have a kids profile with no Pin.... and a guest profile no Pin.

Same thing with Disney+, you can set a 4-digit PIN on your profile. It shows a lock icon when this is the case.

I totally get that.
It happened to one family member once and that's why she decided to protect her account. That's what you see in the picture above.

optional PIN is the most elegant implementation, IMO, just like Netflix and Disney+

agree ... also Prime Video has Pin.... I find profiles useless without a Pin ...

If you implement family member accounts make it optional. As the only person using the software it's annoying to have to select yourself every time.
I can't believe that other apps like Netflix or Prime don't let you opt out of adding different users.

please make this optional, don't force antiquated habits on those of us who have moved on from the past.

Why is everybody so worried about user profiles ... I am sure ChannelsDVR will make it that if you do not create one none will be used.
