Access denied error on DVR restart - Windows 10

I am new to using Channels DVR and I am running into an issue when trying to restart the DVR. On initial install everything works fine, but if I reboot the machine it is on or stop and try to restart I get a pop-up box that says: “Database failure: couldn’t open settings.db: open settings.db: Access is denied.”.

If I reinstall it, everything works again until the restart. I have done this 3 times so far with the same result.

I tried searching the forum but I couldn’t find any posts similar to mine.

I also couldn’t find any logs to upload to help debug this.

Any ideas?

Hmm, that’s weird. The logs are at C:\ProgramData\ChannelsDVR\data\channels-dvr.log

You can check what the file permissions are like in that directory too

Log looks fine. What happens if you shut down the DVR (using the system tray), and then try to start it again (by typing Channels DVR into the Start Menu). Copy/paste the new log messages that appear in the file after trying those steps.

Ok, so after I last posted I did go and check the permissions. While everything looked fine I changed the owner of that folder to my username and now the DVR starts up just fine.

It is just odd that I have never had to do that with another installed program and it always works when I first install the DVR.

It looks like that fixed it but if this isn’t normal behavior and you want me to test anything else just let me know.

I haven’t heard of this before either. Were you running the installer as your regular user, or did you try to run it as administrator?

Either way glad you figured it out and things are fixed now.

I don’t remember exactly but I am pretty sure I right clicked the exe file and did “run as administrator” which is how I always install apps.

Thanks for the quick responses on this though. The app works great by the way! I love the comskip function.

Okay that explains it then. We expect the installer to be run as your own user, and do not require administrator privileges for anything.

Same problem here exactly. Kind of odd that you can’t just install the app and have it work properly after reboot which is exactly what I did.

On my Dell Windows 10 laptop I downloaded the application. Ran the installer, next, next., next like most average pc users and done. Nothing special or unique. It should take care of all of the necessary rights for an average pc user.
Now If I right click and click run as administrator now on the executable it works fine. So what I did then was gave the “user” full rights and that also works. Most people do not know how to assign rights though. Gotta keep it simple stupid :slight_smile:
