Accessing dvr remotely

Ok. I’ve managed to get the dvr screen up remotely. But every recording I go to looks like it’s going to play but it actually just sticks at the sort of in process sign.

Depending on your network connection you may need to change the Streaming Quality on the Settings tab.

If it still doesn’t work please check the Log tab on my.channelsdvr.net for any errors shown.

Firstly, let me say thank you for bothering to respond on boxing day. I’m now checking my stream from home (with my mob network.) the strange thing is, i can play live stuff fine. I can play certain recordings fine but not others. Though they all play fine on my home network.

I have tried various internet stream/cellular stream settings. But no difference.

here is a sample from the log if it helps

Okay I see the problem in your log. Could you upload one of the recordings that not working to google drive and send me a link?

I’m glad YOU do!!

I don’t have google drive any more ( I think) Can I do dropbox instead?

Sure, any upload service is fine. Dropbox, Microsoft OneDrive, etc

A post was merged into an existing topic: How to remote DVR?

Having a similar problem accessing Remote DVR. On my Netgear router, under Port Forwarding, I have a TCP rule for 8089 to go to my server that has the Channels DVR software running on it. When I setup the rule on the Netgear router it asked for the following:

  • Service Name - (I typed in Channels DVR)
  • Service Type - (I selected TCP)
  • External Starting Port - (I put in 8089)
  • External Ending Port - (I put in 8089)
  • Internal Starting Port - (I put in 8089)
  • Internal Ending Port - (I put in 8089)
  • Internal IP Address - (I put in the actual 192.168.x.x IP of the computer that has the Channels DVR software running)

When I follow the instructions from above to check the port number (Enter “IP:8089” into [https://check-host.net] and click the TCP Port button, I get the following result from all sites:
"Connection Timed Out".

NOTE - When I'm on my local WiFi (on my phone) the Channels DVR app on my phone works fine. When I switch to cellular (LTE) it no longer connects.

HELP???

You certainly seem like you have done everything correctly. You did not mention your Channels DVR Setting for Remote Access. Do you have it setup for "Enabled" and "Manual" and verify the IPADDRESS which is what you are doing. If you have it setup for AUTO it will try to update your router for you which I do not like so I have uPnP disabled in my router.

I have it setup for Enabled and Automatic and verified the IP address is correct. I need to have uPNP enabled for other devices in my home. Should I just set this to Manual anyway?

Try clicking on Manual and look for this and verify your IP matches.
Configure your router to forward TCP port 8089 to "your dvr ipaddress"

If you do not click on Manual then you are expecting the DVR to use uPnP to do the setup for you. You are using AUTO and then doing the Manual part yourself. You should either do manual and change you router or do AUTO and allow the DVR to change your router.

uPnP does not always work properly but it "should". You can also use nPnP for some things and still set your DVR to Manual and manually do the Port Forwarding.

I assume one of these is your problem.

Some minor items to add:

  • If your router serving IPs via DHCP, be sure to use a DHCP reservation to ensure the computer running Channels DVR maintains the same internal IP address.
  • When attempting to connect via cellular in the app, be sure to first choose to login to connect remotely.

What is connected to your netgear router on the WAN port? Is it a modem or another router?

If there's another router in front, you need to setup a DMZ on it and send all the traffic to the IP of your netgear.

I know this is old but I cannot access remotely, so I tried this and it works fine:

but when I navigate to https://my.channelsdvr.net I get this:

And though I can connect remotely and see the channel lineups, I cannot playback anything.

I'm having trouble setting up remote access on my new Mac. It worked fine on my PC, so I went back into my AT&T fiber router page kept all the same settings in the Firewall > NAT/Gaming tab (TCP:8089) but changed the "Needed by Device" line from my PC IP address to my Mac.

However, when I try to connect away from home, after clicking Authorize Access, I get this error message:

So I followed your instructions to check if port forwarding is working at check-host.net, and it shows that I'm "Connected" from everywhere. Then I ran Troubleshooting under the Support tab on the Server page, all boxes have green checkmarks, and Remote Access says "Successfully established external connection." But when I navigate to https://my.channelsdvr.net/ the menu bar along the top loads, but none of the tabs work, and the page just shows a spinning wheel.

Any ideas?

That error usually means your security/privacy settings on iOS aren't allowing network access to the Channels app

Hm, that's weird.

I haven't changed any settings on my phone, and Remote Access worked fine when the server was on my PC--I used it all the time.

Maybe some issue with 5G signal, or your cell service is blocking it somehow. Does it work on another device?

Okay, I asked my sister to check it from her house, and she said it plays fine on her firestick, so maybe it is my 5G or cell service blocking it. :man_shrugging:

I have to house sitting for her next week though, so I guess we'll see if it keeps working. :crossed_fingers:

Thanks for the quick response. You guys rock!
