Accessing remote server when there is also a local server

I was playing around with installing a Channels DVR server at my Italian home to see if I could watch Italian TV when I am back in the States. When I created a server instance in Italy, it overrode the US server in the client app (TS4K) and I could not get to the US server at all. Turning off the Italian (local) server fixed the problem.

Question - is there a way to access/see a remote server when there is a local server online?

I think one of the devs commented here that they are working on supporting this kind of scenario better. In the mean time, the best way that I've found to do this is to uncheck the "Enable Bonjour Discovery" option on your local instance. Since you're using Android TV you can install both the "Channels: Whole Home DVR" app and the Channels for HDHomeRun app. Now configure one of the apps to connect to your local instance by IP address and configure the other app to connect to the remote instance. This does however mean that the local instance won't be accessible remotely unless you setup a local vpn.

Thanks - the bonjour suggestion probably resolves the issue in the short-run while I am debugging and seeing if I can get everything to work.

In the long-term, I only need the Italian server to run when I am away. There is no HDHomeRun here - I am getting IPTV feeds of the digitale terrestre (OTA) broadcasts. I want Channels DVR in Italy to use those as sources and then I can watch them in US when I am back. Problem is the IPTV feeds for broadcast TV are buggy. Kodi seems to be able to tune them reliably but I don't think I can access the Kodi channels in Channels and I can't access Kodi remotely when I am back in the States.

Another alternative is to setup a VPN connection to my house in Italy but my router is supplied by TIM (my fiber provider) and configuring it for a VPN seems non-trivial.

So, I have a # of paths to get this done and a week or so before we head back to try to see what I can get working.
