Ad block DNS and TVE?

I was wondering if one uses a Ad Blocking DNS,
(like Ad Guard, or Alternative DNS...etc there are many some with custom filters/controls)
Or any other network level of ad blocking..

Would this affect the ads that are in the TVE feeds?

When i was using one while back before I had channels, I have had ad bock DNS affect some sites, usually news sites, that wont load a video cause it can't load the ad. Some streaming services also had issues on PC.

Custom DNS like that usually breaks TVE. YMMV

Thats what I was thinking, but just wanted to check.

How about a local caching DNS server for your adblocking:
unbound-adblock

I'm using pihole (see https://pi-hole.net](https://pi-hole.net/), as well as the SafeAccess and Threat Prevention features part of Synology router OS. No problem.

I think self-hosted solutions are probably fine, especially if you can see and whitelist blocked domains.

Forgot to mention that while my internet is ad free now, none of the solutions I've mentioned will help with ads inside the TVE feed (that's what comskip is for). Also no improvement for youtube ads.

I use both pi-hope and opendns, and haven’t had any issues.

I just setup an old netbook to run Ad Guard Home DNS server, something very much like Pi-Hole, but a bit more on the simple easy to use side.

(I had also used the Ad Guard free DNS set via my router for a short time.)

So far, not seeing any issues with Channels and TVE.

It is curious to see all the requests and things being blocked that are coming from my 2 Nvidia Shields.

Ha! It's crazy right? I use Pi Hole and generally 36% of all traffic is blocked. Back when I had the Fire TV, it was the biggest offender. If you install ANY Network TV app on the Shield, it will run up the percentage blocked. They don't seem to ever shut up, especially at night. I've never had an issue with Pi Hole and Channels DVR. One side effect on PlayOn -- Tubi and CW ads are not recorded because they are block, kind of nice. The Tubi and CW Mobile Apps won't run with Pi Hole active. Gives you an idea of the different approaches used between Mobile App and Web Apps.

I use NextDNS and it works just fine

I use NextDNS as well. The only issue I had was the Hallmark channels didn't work due to it being a new domain. I had to whitelist the domain and everything has worked great since. It doesn't block any ads though.

Next DNS can and does block ads when you have it setup right...

It can block adds on TVE streams?! Would you mind sharing how you have it setup? I have most all of the blocking enabled with the following blacklists:

NextDNS ads & trackers
Adguard DNS filter
Unchecky ads
Perflyst's smart-tv blocklist

Sorry I misread that, I thought you were talking about web advertisements not the actual TV ads. Nothing will block the ads on a tv stream...

I have these enabled:
NextDNS Ads & Trackers Blocklist

I am just using Adguard Home set to mostly default setting, which just uses thier own DNS block list, same one used if u just use the free DNS service from them. but since u run the DNS server locally, u have full control over it and can add remove lists etc. I have only enabled the secondary List for NoCoin.

It uses Quad9 Unsecured DND over HTTPS as its upsream DNS by default, but u can change it to whatever you want. I assume that is default, as the Adguard Home software it self you set to block what u want. I changed it to the Quad9 Secured w/ ECS support It include blocklist, DNSSEC validation, and other security features.
(there is no need to have Adguard DNS as the upstream DNS service, since, you are running locally the same thing, double filtering using the same list/service like that does nothing)

I still have to keep uBlock Origin installed in my browsers though, as that catches things that, so far, any DNS based ad block I have tried does not, like YT ads and on certain...torrent sites. to bad uBlock doesn't have a service like AdGuard Home or Pi-Hole.

yea. i have not even been using much in the last 18hrs, but alas, my Shield Pro is the top offender for traffic. Followed by the Tube Shield in my living room, that has not even been used once since i setup AdGaurd Home on my network, so that is just pure idle background traffic it is capturing.
