ADBTuner: A "channel tuning" application for networked Google TV / Android TV devices

Hi all!
Based on some of the success stories I see that some of you have shared about DirecTV and ABDTuner, I'm thinking about jumping from YouTube TV.

The channels I want/need are all within the "MyEntertainment" package, and the "MyCinema" addon. $45/mo as opposed to $83/mo with YTTV.

Do any of you have a similar subscription? If so, can you help me with a "For Dummies" summary of steps for me to take to get DirecTV working with ADBTuner?

In particular, I'm concerned with the app needing to be closed to tune properly. For instance, how do I implement this?

One last thing if you want to try. Use the Development version of ADBTuner to allow a custom config. The DTV App does not work well when the program is left open. I have a config that closes the DTV App before tuning, just in case it was left open, and I close the app when tuning is complete.

Wanted to give a quick summary before sharing more details later.

I have four Onn 4K Plus boxes. Tuning DirecTV with ADBTuner has worked well for the last few days of testing. I don’t need to do anything special with app, and app does not need to be left running or closed.

At first I was closing the DTV app at the end of each tuning to make sure fresh start at each next tune. This is no longer necessary. In fact leaving the app running in background (just going to Home Screen at end of tune) makes tuning faster the next time a channel is called.

I have only been testing production for a few days but I’m very encouraged. Tuning has been reliable and fast. About 5-8 seconds to pull up a channels. If the deep link URLs don’t change (and it seems they won’t) ADBTuner is a good production solution for DirecTV.

A quick note on devices. I have four Onn boxes not so much for multi viewing, but redundant tuning. If one box times out, WIFI delay or tuner lock, there are others on standby by. I did test some of the 2023 Onn 4K boxes, which worked fine for DirectTV app, but not as well for the other apps I’m testing with ADBTuner. The 4K Plus boxes are impressive for $30, very fast and don’t produce much heat.

AH4C will stay in production for the time being as it is reliable and the Gemini/Osprey boxes give me a slightly better picture. But I going to leave ADBTuner as the priority this DTV week to see how recordings go and how much my family complains.

Yeah, I have ADBTuner running with a LinkPi ENC5-V2 and 5 ONN 4K (not PRO) wifi boxes.

I have several YTTV channels through TVE, and the rest with ADBTuner. It works great!
Right now I'm looking to cut costs by switching providers.

I just signed up for the DirecTV deal. 5 day free trial, then the 2 month discounted offer. There's also $21.50 Cashback through Capital One Shopping if I stick with it for at least 2 mos.

My YTTV account renews in 4 days. I can put it on hold at that point, rather than completely cancelling, just in case I need to go back...

I really appreciate your help!

Aww, crud. That didn't work quite right. Do I need to do some special magic to add the DirecTV as a TVE source?

To that issue, I had problems logging into DTV last night. I think it's just their system being wonky as they prep the new Genre / ESPN Unlimited / Gemini specific bundles.

Gotcha. As the graphic says, "Please try again" I give it a shot later.
I should probably try to move this specific subject (TVE) to a different conversation string.

Below is a quick reference for my ADBT/DTV setup.

Configuration

With further testing, I found you don't really need to do anything special with the tuning config. I have not found the need to leave the DTV app running, or close at end of tune.

The "Deep Links (default, recommended)" Configuration for tuning works just fine. This leaves the DirecTV App open and pauses the video on exit. Next tuning fires right back up and is pretty fast.

For my use, I prefer to go to home screen after tuning as I use other apps in ADBT. I use a custom config, below if you want to do your own testing (pertinent parts):

Configuring the DTV App

A few quick tips to get the Direct TV app ADBT ready. Once installed:

Open, and you may need to create a profile, do so.
After profile, turn off game scores if prompted
In app Settings > Preferences > Select Profile on Launch > OFF
In app Settings > Preferences > Launch Preference > Live TV
In app Settings > Preferences > Show Game Scores > OFF
Go find a live sports event, see if it prompts you for Game Scores and disable again (they really want you to have Game Scores).

OPTIONAL: Development Build with Addtional Playlists

The newest ADBT build 20250823-1 supports Addtional Playlists (thanks again to @turtletank). This allows you add an M3U sources to Channels per unique app in ADBT. You could use this feature to test both YTTV and DirecTV at the same time. To do so, you would edit your existing ADBT source in Channels to use the YTTV list, and add a second ADBT Custom Source for DTV.

Hardware: Onn Boxes

My testing this week as been mostly on the Onn 4K Plus boxes. I had two 2023 Onn 4K boxes in the mix earlier this week, mixed in with two Plus boxes. They 2023 boxes are fine, but do take longer to tune. I highly recommend you pickup a Plus box for testing as I think you'll be impressed with how much faster they are.

If you have any questions, I'll be in and out the rest of the day. Since you already have ADBT setup, with a nearly identical LinkPi and Onn setup, I think you'll be successful with little effort.

Happy to share. My current ADBT/DTV workflow is promising and I may keep it in production. Those Genre Packs are pretty good deals if you don't need every channel.

If ADBT does not work out for some reason, you could also explore AH4C setup using Osprey Gemini boxes. AH4C/Osprey has been my main DTV setup for a year or two (that long, really?). It is super reliable as the turning is done by channel numbers which don't change.

If you explore the AH4C route, you could buy used Opsrey/Gemini boxes off eBay. They are cheap and have Ethernet. Oh, also slower to update, currently on Android 11, giving hope ADB USB Debug does not get nerfed.

Can the DTV Osprey Gemini boxes be used with this project or are they only good for AH4C?

Osprey Boxes are really only suitable for AH4C. They don’t respond well to adb tuning with deep links (I tried). The default launcher, which really is just the DTV app, is aggressive about taking over focus to maintain the cable-box experience.

All that said the TV tuning experience is reliable and the video quality is good. I still recommend as possible use in AH4C.

My ethernet hard-wired Google TV Streamers which started with Android 14 keep on trucking with ADBTuner about a year in. Don't know if it's because I hard-wired them or not, but have had no problems. Seems like Google did something weird with their last Android update to CCWGTVs. Restart or no, the Google TV Streamers have never stopped working, or had any troubles, so far.

@jsfullam Found something interesting in my testing tonight. I have a typo in one of my channels.

Disney Jr. (289) Should be:

What's interesting is when you send the DTV app a bad Deep Link, the app will then stop responding to all Deep Links until you force close the app. This is not ideal for automation.

The work around is to add the following to Pre and Post Tune:

"am force-stop '||TARGET_PACKAGE_NAME||'"

Forcing the app to always start fresh makes for reliable tuning, but it is a big slower. On my test setup, it's a few seconds more to tune, so it's doable especially for recording. But for channel flipping, it's nice to get a 4-5 second tune in.

I'll keep testing.

If you're using a developer version of ADBT, there is the option for Custom Configurations. It will be at location /configurations after your ADBT URL. For example: http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:5592/configurations.

On the Configurations Page, ADD NEW CONFIGURATION (top menu) to generate a new config. Paste and replace everything in the template config with my sample below and save it:

After saving the config, edit one of your channels on the main ADBT page, and change the Configuration to "DirecTV App". You may need to refresh the page for the new config to show up on drop down menu.

If the config does not work, it may be due to a UUID not being created by your ADBT. In that case, create a new config, then copy everything in my sample config above, but keep your UUID line.

By the way, I tried adding the DTV TVE source again. It looks like it finally went through. It's scanning channels!

I’m not sure anyone can guarantee what ADB will work in the future, just what works at the moment. I would speculate the Google official devices are more likely to get the ADB security change.
