Adopted vs External vs Network Storage on Shield TV

I’m just wondering how people choose to set up storage on their Shield TV for use with Channels DVR. Let me know if you use adopted, external, or network storage and what set up you recommend, especially if you have tried multiple methods. I’ve used External storage the most and I like that it allows my hard drive to spin down when it isn’t in use. However sometimes it disconnects from the Shield and there is no way for me to tell until I see that recordings have failed. I think it would be more reliable as adopted storage, but I think the hard drive would run 24/7 if I’m not mistaken. I don’t currently have a router that allows for a USB hard drive connection, so I haven’t tried mounting as network storage. Thanks for any input!

External storage is recommended.

Adopted storage will reformat and encrypt the drive, so you won’t be able to use it with any other device.

IMO, I would set up as External and plan to reboot Shield at least 1-2x per week…every 3 days seemed to work for me, but I’ve since abandoned and rely on a mid range Qnap NAS for Channels DVR. Currently testing the efficiency of a low cost, low powered Win10 installation (ACEPC GK-1). Results, although not perfect are encouraging, but I still have more faith in my Qnap 251A…no problems for over 1 year.

Thanks for the advice. I haven’t had to restart my Shield TV at all really and I think it may have been Plex that causes the external drive to disconnect so I’ve stopped sharing my Channels recordings with my Plex library and now Channels is the only app that should be accessing the drive. Only time will tell now I guess. I am seriously considering switching to a NAS setup now though. I just used the Shield TV since I already had it, but now that I know I will be sticking to Channels for a while I may go all in just for the peace of mind.

There are many users utilizing their SHIELD as primary DVR now. Since Oreo it seems to be a lot more stable.
