Advanced use-cases

Since it sounds like the DVR will just be storing MPG files on a server in a file hierarchy, will I be able to just dump arbitrary video files into that hierarchy to watch them in Channels? [Presumably there’s some database or metadata I’d have to manually edit so that they’d show correctly in Channels.]

Related, can I edit a stored MPG file in-place without making Channels cranky? I’d love to be able to manually transcode a recording to a more efficient archival format for stuff I want to keep. Can I do that without telling Channels about the change? [Will it just play the file it finds with the correct name and location?]

You cannot place arbitrary files in the recordings folder. They will be ignored.

Files can be changed in place, but you may need to tell the server to refresh its metadata about the file.

Can I start recording a show I’m currently watching and if so, will it dump the live TV saved on the apple TV to the DVR server so I have the whole program?

Yes

No, not at this time.

Hi tmm1, is there a way via command line to have channels refresh meta data?

In the web UI for the DVR, you can click the gear on a file and then select Refresh.

The equivalent is possible via this command, but you would need to know the ID of the recording to use it:

curl -XPUT http://localhost:8089/dvr/files/XXXX/reprocess

thank you that helped a lot.
