Advice for my first Apple TV device

We've been an Android household but I'm getting tired of hearing complaints in my family about the Android client app having issues. And especially my wife who has said to me more than once: "You're paying for this? Why don't they fix it?"

Unfortunately, Android is not getting as much love as the Apple platform, and I understand why.

So...

I'm seriously considering getting an Apple TV at least for our living room to start.

I just saw one model that I can get from a store and it's the Apple TV 4K 128 GB (3rd generation) with Wi-Fi and Ethernet. Price: $149.99

Is it a good one? Is there a better one?

I use that one in my bedroom on my 4K Tv and I use the model just below that in the living room with my projector. I haven't had any issues with either model. You can't go wrong with that one.

There are rumors of a newer model coming out but..... it is just a rumor so who knows. I have 3rd gen and 2 second gens. Go with the 3rd gen... the remote that comes with the 3rd gen also has usb c port for charging where the second gen had the apple proprietary charge port.

Also I went from android to apple and didn't regret the change.

Thank you. Order placed. I will receive it tomorrow.

It started with one, but now I use 4 different AppleTV4k’s of different generations in different rooms. Each has been solid whether on Ethernet or WiFi. Hope you love it!

I shouldn't of read this thread....I also have an Apple TV 4K 128GB (3rd Generation) en route now. Never owned an Apple product as I've been using the NVidia Shield Pro since I started with Channels. The interface is getting tired and it's from 2018 so figured will give it shot.

Curious... do the Apple devices scrimp on ram like every.single.f'ing.android.device?

In other words, do they have more than 3gigs of ram? I'd buy one in a heartbeat if they had one with 6 or 8gigs.

Hell, I'd buy 2 more Shield Pros if they came out with new models that had nothing more than added ram to make them 8gigs. Still haven't found a reputable Android device with more than 3g.

1st and 2nd gen ATV 4K models had 3GB of RAM, and the 3rd gen was 4GB I believe. Storage capacity was either 64GB or 128GB.

you're are confusing RAM with storage. they don't come with that much ram, only 3 or 4 gigs of ram.

After one day of use, so far so good. :slightly_smiling_face:

Channels DVR looks nicer on it and is more responsive, especially when browsing the TV guide.
Now I need to customize Channels more with personal sections, etc.

The remote takes some getting used to, and it doesn't turn on the TV. :worried: I had to disable the touchpad because people have a tendency to leave their thumbs on it and they were annoyed because that kept moving the selection in the menus.

Other than that, I am quite pleased with it.

Once my family gets comfortable with it, I will get more for the other TVs.

I think if you're really invested in Channels DVR, you might as well get the better hardware for it too.

Your TV should have a setting that would allow HDMI-connected devices to turn it on and off. I have a ~20 year old TV that turns on and off with my AppleTV

That was my experience in a nutshell. Pretty much did all the same steps, even turning off the touchpad due to accidental touches. Wish they had a way to make it harder to do so and I would leave it on.

Thank you. I will check the settings again. I found that I can turn the TV off but not turn it on. Maybe I missed something.

I have a pretty recent Samsung TV so it sounds like it should work.

Not sure if this is the setting for your tv.

  1. Enable Anynet+ (HDMI-CEC): Go to your Samsung TV's Settings > General/Connection > External Device Manager > Anynet+ (HDMI-CEC) and make sure it's On.

Also a different HDMI port might change that as well.

Others said firmware update as well.

Settings > Remotes and Devices > Touch Surface Tracking

Yes I tried that but it wasn't enough. Looking for something like a 2 second delay before activating kinda thing.

It's strange because I didn't touch anything and it just started working yesterday, the remote turns the TV on now. :slightly_smiling_face:

Electronics can be weird. The last Roku (Roku3) I had years ago interfered with the oscillating fan I had in the same room. I would turn the fan on with its remote and the TV would go off, or change inputs. I would change something with the TV remote and the fan would change speeds.

After months of tinkering here and there, I threw away the Roku and everything was fixed.

I actually had that happen when I first connected my Apple TV to my Samsung TV. It would work somewhat but not reliably. Then after a couple of days it just worked perfectly and has ever since.
