I run into four situations where it’s a pita to go back into settings, turn off a source or swap priority, go to my show, and then remember to turn the source back on or fix priority when done. Also the fact that there are local client and server settings makes it worse. (And the fact one is controlled from my tv remote and the other from my phone) 1) antenna signal is breaking up and I want to switch to streaming 2) a streaming blackout rights issue (Rudolph the red nose reindeer blacks out on local streaming but plays on antenna) 3) streaming resolution is low, and I want to switch to antenna to see if it looks better 4) one of my providers dropped a channel, and I haven’t rescanned yet, and want to quickly check if the stream is down on all providers or just one.
It would be nice if the option to choose your source existed in these four places 1) long hold on the program in the guide, the program card menu pops up, a down arrow connected next to watch (and record), that gives you a “watch on” and “record on” menu and lets you pick antenna or streaming etc, xfinity, directv. 2) watching a show, press down arrow, “switch” “source” or “watch on” next to the record button. It’s really annoying to leave a program to dick around in settings, when it could be two clicks and seamless transition so you don’t miss anything. The fact that I have to go change settings that stay permanent until changed back, just to check a stream is maddening. And the fact it takes just as long to undo when my spot check didn’t work out, means I miss that much more at a crucial moment. (I’m usually switching sources for a reason, the show is important enough or the quality issue is bad enough to need to switch.) 3) clicking on the channel logo itself in guide, having a way to see or pick which feeds are available to watch live OR record on. 4) you click on a show, it is just a black screen (maybe credential or password change at the source, or the source dropped the channel. Instead of just an eventual tuner error, or logon in error, a button appears to check if the channel works on another source.
Also with regard to the deduplication settings, it would be nice if you could 1) disable deduplication 2) exempt a source from deduplication (deduplication xfinity and directv, but not antenna) and 3) force antenna numbers onto streams even if antenna is not priority one or when antenna is disabled. Or having channel number priority independent from source priority. It’s disorienting for other people in the house for locals to move between 4-1 and 6004 whenever they pick up the remote based on what the last person in the house did. Lots of scrolling. It could also be nice to be able to “regroup” locals, eg 6004 shows up as a separate channel directly below 4-1, and you can choose which one to record and or watch. You should also be able to modify which source a preexisting pass is set to use. Let’s say my priority is antenna but I know some recording usually cuts out, do I want to change the source just this once or every time forward.
Even more granularily, there are situations where extremely precise priority control would be nice. Say for example, channel 11 is always from antenna (watch or record) but 4 and 5 are from stream by default. Or “when I click channel 4 go to antenna, but make all recordings from the stream instead.” I know that last one is sort of possible with the interplay between client and dvr settings, but it’s still all or nothing not per channel. A sort of hacky way to allow some of this would be to allow adding the same sources to priority multiple times. Let me add the same hdhomerun twice both above and below directv/xfinity. And each one can have different channels exposed. Let me add xfinity twice. (Let me add the xfinity account from my house and cabin as well???
)
As it stands I’m constantly monkeying with enabling and disabling sources, changing priority, and if I 1) do it in the client I can’t change where the recording happens, and if I do it 2) on the dvr, I’m changing the guide numbers on all the TVs in the house people are using and I’m changing ALL recordings, not one.
It sucks that I’m basically asking for a setting to be exposed for troubleshooting purposes, but between signal issues, rights issues, session issues, compression quality, a lack of control where specific recordings source from, the interplay between client and server settings affecting channel numbers and future recordings, channel numbers constantly moving around in the guide, multiple people using a tv, multiple people using multiple tvs (if I change server priority to change a recording, it changes the channel numbers in a different room in real time), the current implementation is untenable for our household.
tldr: flipping between antenna and streaming, for the same channel, should be as easy as flipping the channel with the channel flipper buttons.
I also recognize after writing this that stack by channel number accomplishes some of this, but it’s just so chaotic to have the same channels in the guide three times strewn all over the place, and still doesn’t fix being able to change what channel a recording happens on.
