Alternate dvr between two computers

I have two computers. The Channels dvr is setup on my old MacBook Pro which runs 24/7 and dedicated right now to the Channels dvr service. Someday in the near future, another family will need to use this computer for homework (its technically a family computer) and thus stop the dvr service when they log into their account.

My backup plan (idea at this point) is to install the Channels dvr service on my second computer (into a dedicated dvr user account) which is my personal computer that I use on a daily basis for everything.

My question is, will this work? I know if I sign off the family computer it stops the dvr service and the other family is free to login and use the fist computer. So if if sign on my second computer's dvr account... will it fire up and I can use that temporarily (assuming I've installed everything there)? The family isn't privy to how our TV channel guide works so I'm trying to minimize the disruption to the TV channels when this event happens.

My concern is flipping back to computer 1 again. Just reboot into the dvr account and we're good to go? I think this should work I'm just wanting to confirm.

Flipping back and forth isn’t going to be great as you’d need to migrate your recordings every time. Moving to a new computer is easy:

When you do this, you need to make sure bonjour discovery is turned off on the Channels DVR Server you no longer want to use.

Your plan sounds like a huge pain though.

I’d highly suggest getting dedicated hardware as disrupting TV in the house is going to just have everyone mad at you and a pain in the butt for yourself. It should be stable.

I’d suggest just getting a raspberry pi and making that your system.

Thanks for the reply... Raspberry Pi solution sounds best for sure!
