ATSC 3.0 Nextgen experience (Twin Cities, MN)

That is what NICK posted on supported devices that do not do Cloud transcode and those that do. APPLETV uses Cloud transcode Service... on HDHR App.

How is it cloud transcode? I thought it was the Channels DVR server or app that is doing the processing.
I can not play back the recordings in any other app, like Infuse, on the Apple TV or iOS devices. I get no audio then. Also, i have played back my 3.0 recordings fine with Channels, when my internet connection was out.

Channels DVR does not do well when handling AC4. That is why I do not record any ATSC 3.0 Sports using Channels DVR. I use the HDHR DVR.

As it stands now, my recordings of AFV and Family Guy, i just run a script to convert the recordings to AC3 audio with a 5db boost. I can then take the .mkv and toss it on my SMB share and play it fine with Infuse on Apple TV.
Or, i can change the extension to .mpg and overwrite the Channels DVR recording file, and then Channels Plays it back just fine with proper audio volume.

It a bit of a pain though. WHy i been trying to get ABC to fix their station, but, seems it is not an issue with them? If HDHR app is "cloud transcodeing" the audio, then it must be applying a boost, or something is up with how Channels is handling these 2 specific station.

How? the HDHR app does not have any record/DVR function, it is live view only. They have DVR server or something?

HDHR has DVR function for years now $35 Dollars a year. I am an original Backer (kickStarter), so I still get mine at no cost.

DVR Service - SiliconDust

Ah. i see. Never used that. I always used Windows Media Center, then Emby, and now Channels DVR for many years. I can not stand the HDHR app UI, it is terrible.

it has it's Perks adding Storage is easy you just install the DVR on any supported os/HDHR device and they all talk to each other. Sharing Recordings and Tasks they appear as 1 DVR. The new HDHR Flex devices you just attach a HD and it acts as a DVR.

It is the ONLY thing that does AC4 far as i found out. No other app or software does for PC anyway. Not even the major software players. I took the ffmpeg.exe from the server and use that to convert AC4 audio.

Also, Channels does fine for the other multiple ATSC 3.0 stations in my market, it just these 2 stations that have low volume in Channels. All of the 3.0 stations are the same AC4 audio, so it is puzzling to me why just these 2 stations are low volume.

Channels support for ATSC3 is experimental and has known issues with volume in some markets.

But it strange that only 2 channels have volume issues, when all others do not.
They all seem to have the same AC4 audio stream...
Silicon Dust seems to have worked it out, so hope Channels can.

Fox and ABC are the 2 main stations i record shows on. And since the 1.0 stations now are lower bitrate, and a bit lower signal as well, the 3.0 version is a bit better to use.

My Fox station in Dallas had low (almost none) for two years, then last month I noticed the volume was working properly. Not sure if Channels or the broadcaster made a change, but it is much better now. I still don't trust ATSC3 for my Channels recordings, it is not reliable yet. Maybe in 2 years the kinks will be worked out, but Channels may or may not be able to build a system that can handle DRM. If or when Silicon Dust completes their development of ATSC3 DRM, they may be the only way to watch and record using their HDHomerun tuners.

It's looking less and less likely, IMO. The tone of Nick's posts has drastically changed in the past month or two. They were reasonably optimistic for a while, not any more. I think A3SA just isn't going to approve a gateway product for encrypted content. Not all that different from CableLabs refusing to approve a a gateway product for their encrypted content. At the end of the day, those two organizations essentially serve the same masters.

I'm surprised SD hasn't developed a non-gateway device to hedge their bets, but maybe it's just not doable for them.

The bad part about this entire ordeal is ATSC 3.0 could very well put companies like Silicondust and Channels DVR out of business.

Until the dust clears, I don't even bother with issues for this experimental technology. It may not matter in the end. These companies didn't sell us a bill of goods, the goalposts were moved after the hype started and people were buying devices to take advantage.

The whole thing stinks, IMO.

(FWIW, I live in the Cincinnati market, 23 miles from downtown. I get ZERO ATSC 1.0 channels because of terrain issues. The lighthouse tower they use for the Nextgen channels happens to be on a HUGE hill north of town and I got all the channels until most of them enabled DRM.)

I upgraded from using a computer monitor, to a tv for my main media consumption and Apple TV/Channels DVR use.
TV has ATSC 3.0 tuner.
Hooked up spare small antenna.
Peek at the 2 DRM channels WCCO, and KARE.

Ok... that was nice..... moving on.

FOX (KMSP Fox 9) just today, 11-15-24, has enabled DRM Encryption for ATSC 3.0.

I stopped using the ATSC 3.0 version of that channel long ago. The sound was always too low.

For me, it is channel ABC on 3.0 that has very low volume. They all use AC4.
