I’m having an issue with the channels app on one of my Apple TV’s. Whenever I watch anything (OTA or TVE) the auto constantly cuts in and out, though video seems fine. This doesn’t happen on any other app for this ATV on this particular home theater setup so I know it’s not a systemic issue. On the same setup, my Nvidia Shield also has no issues with audio when watching something via Channels (this device is also the host for the DVR server). Oddest part is for my OTHER Apple TV (hooked up to a different setup) this never occurs. Any idea what is going on? I submitted diagnostics for further troubleshooting. Thanks.
You might try changing the audio driver you are using in the channels app settings to see if there is any change.
Seems to be working after switching over to the experimental driver (was on Default). After switching back to Default also still working - at least for the moment. I tried a few full Apple TV’s before this advice and that didn’t fix it, so perhaps this is some sort of app bug the devs should check out? Regardless thanks for the advice!
If it happens again I would recommend submitting diagnostics from the settings area. If it is a bug hopefully there will be something in there the Devs can use to find it.
Well guess I spoke too soon, as it happened again and unfortunately this time changing audio drivers had no effect. I did submit diagnostics via the ATV app. Any other troubleshooting ideas?
Anything else I can provide to help identify the issue with this audio bug?
Nothing unusual in the logs. We're sending audio to tvOS with no errors reported. It's strange you would see this on both TVE and OTA, considering one is AAC 2ch and the other is AC3 6ch. Seems like a systemic issue somewhere in the audio pipeline. I'm not sure why only our app would be affected..
Does the official HDHR app work fine?
What is the audio path between the Apple TV and the speakers?
@tmm1 Thanks for the response. The audio feeds through an AV receiver. It definitely isn’t a systemic thing, because every other app on the ATV works just fine with no audio drops at all, and my nvidia shield (also connected to the receiver) plays the content without issue via the android channels app. On the ATV channels app it’s literally losing audio every few seconds. Also, my second Apple TV on a different TV doesn’t have the problem. Seems to be isolated to this particular instance of the Channels app on tvOS.
Last I checked there isn’t an official HDHR app for tvOS live TV only (don’t want to pay for the DVR since I’m using Channels after all
), but via the phone it works fine.
Have you tried temporarily removing the AV receiver (use tv speakers) to eliminate it as a possible issue (not that I know of any issues, but to eliminate a possibility)?
Or try swapping the Apple TVs
I did try different inputs on the receiver (swapped with the shield) and the issue followed the Apple TV. Haven’t tried flipping the ATVs yet, just know that the problem is on one ATV and not the other, and every other source on the trouble spot works without issue - including channels via android. Seems highly unlikely a ATV swap would show anything other than that the problem follows the ATV but I can give it a try.
I would simplify first, rather than swap ATV. If you go direct from the ATV to the TV and bypass the receiver does the issue occur through the TV speakers? I would start there.
You need to confirm this. Is your other Apple TV the same model ?
and if this is the case put up a screen shot of the audio settings in the Apple TV. If there is nothing of distinction, simply try resetting it to see if it fixes it.
