The channels app seems to be adding some audio processing that increases gain by at least 3 dB with some sort of processing that adds distortion producing a shrill sound. This doesn’t happen on other ATV apps (for ex., PBS, Netflix, HBO) or when I play the same OTA channels through JRiver on my Mac Mini. What are you doing to the audio? Why aren’t there any user audio controls in the Channels app?
Hmm afaik we simply decode the audio and send it to tvOS. tvOS does a little bit of post processing to mix in system sounds, depending on what your audio settings are on the Apple TV.
Have you tried switching between “Best Quality” and “Surround Sound”?
I run in stereo mode in ATV.
It sounds like really low quality lossy MP3. Have you done something with recent versions that might affect audio? I don’t remember previous versions doing this.
I see, it might be due to how we convert surround sound into stereo. Are you not able to use Best Available?
Best Available sends surround sound signal to my receiver which doesn’t produce any sound since I have the receiver set for stereo.
So you are converting surround to stereo? I thought ATV did that with the Stereo mode setting?
Yes we are down converting to 2 channels.
Maybe we can output 6 channels and let the ATV do the downmixing. We can also probably tweak how we downmix. Let me take a deeper look later this week.
Ok. Probably best to let ATV do the downmixing.
