I’m on the latest release TVOS, Channels App and Quattro firmware. I’ve started getting a lag on the audio where it comes about a second after the video. It’s only doing it on the Channels app. It does it on both recorded and live shows. If I try on InstaTV I don’t have the issue so it seems to point to the Channels app. Didn’t have this issue yesterday.
What is the version number listed in the app?
3.1.5
That’s weird it would work one day and change the next…
If you can make a 2 minute recording from an affected channel and email to [email protected] I will see if it has the same problem here.
Video sent. Not sure if the lag is in the recording itself (shows I recorded previously are showing lag) or in the playing of the video.
I loaded that recording into my DVR and it plays back without issue.
Sounds like something in your audio path may be introducing the delay… You can try changing your Apple TV audio settings to Stereo to see if it goes away. I think InstaTV always sends stereo audio, whereas we are sending Surround Sound when requested.
I’ll give it a shot. I tried both with audio to the soundbar via Arc and just direct to the TV. Both had it. Ironically if I change the home streaming from Original to 1080p then it syncs fine. Are there any cons to running that setting?
So it seems like the 1080p home streaming is stereo as well? Stereo on Apple TV or setting to 1080p both seem to work fine. The guide says the news is in stereo though. Is something in Channels forcing it to surround? Or perhaps the show is mislabeled or the TV station broadcasts differently?
The stereo tag in the guide data is not reliable. Local broadcast channels are always surround sound, and I confirmed the recording sample you sent me is 5.1
If you’re using the DVR to transcode, then yes, the audio is currently transcoded to stereo as well. In Original Quality it sends the original surround sound track.
So it does seem to be a lag with surround sound in that case. Strangely it’s only doing it with Channels though. Tried surround sound content on Netflix and Amazon Prime and no lag. Hmmmm
Usually delays like this occur because something in your audio path is slow when decoding dolby digital and thus introduces the delay. Some TVs do this when using ARC. If you wire the ATV directly into the speaker it should not have any delay.
I’ll give it a shot. Had it wired mostly direct last week going through the AVR Key but with with handshake issues I removed it. Definitely a weird time in the technology of TVs. Hard to get everything working reliably. Through the soundbar direct I lose Vision, through the AVR Key I get handshake issues, through the TV via Arc to the soundbar I get audio delay. Seems like I gotta figure out which I’m willing to live with. Appreciate the help.
Put the AVR Key back into the chain and it seems back to normal. Not sure why I didn’t notice it the last few days. Hopefully the handshake issues will be better with the new SDR changes.
