Back-to-back recording question

New user here. Very pleased.

I am using both OTA/HDHR, as well as Locast, with OTA/HDHR as priority tuner (since it has better audio and video quality). All favorites are on OTA/HDHR. Locast is essentially a backup.

I have Channels DVR set to record NFL games, with 90 minute end padding

On Sunday, I noticed that when games are back to back, channels will record the first game off HDHR (with padding capturing some of the second game), but it records the second game (in it’s entirety) with Locast.

Is this by design, or is there a setting that forces all recordings to use OTA/HDHR, even when padding overlaps?

Thank you.

Back to back recordings are possible via the same tuner.

Not sure what happened in your case, but you can look at the dvr log and see what happened when it went to start the second recording. It should show the list of channels it would attempt and which order and if there were any problems when trying to use the higher priority channels.

Another thing to consider is your tuner priority in the Channels DVR web UI controls the devices used for recordings and the tuner priority in your clients controls what device is used to watch live from the client.
Two different things.

I checked tuner priority in the DVR web UI, and the OTA/HDHR is listed as a priority.

I checked the log around the time in question, and found hundreds (maybe even thousands) of error message like the ones I've pasted below. (IP addresses obscured. Games in question were broadcast on channels 13 and 7. 5916 13.1 and 5906 7.1 are the Locast channels).

Not sure what to make of this -- any ideas? I'm wondering if I should just disable Locast, but I'm worried that it then won't record anything at all.

(Also, in case it matters, my HDHR is the four-tuner model. During the time in question, there were a total of four games to be recorded -- two back to back on each channel, with overlap due to padding).

This means the DVR server was not able to connect to the HDHR. You obscured the IP and port but I'm guessing it was the IP of your HDHR and port 5004?

Maybe the IP changed? Or it was unplugged from the network.

Yes, IP of HDHR and Port 5004. I've got my router set to give static IP to HDHR. Now that you mention it, I was doing some maintenance on my network cabinet around that same time -- perhaps I bumped a cable.

I'll see what happens next Sunday. Maybe this was just user error.

If the HDHR was offline when the recording started, I'm assuming that channels would work its way down the priority list until it found the program on Locast. And then once recording commenced, it would not switch back to the HDHR until the next recording event. Is that accurate? (that would explain why the earlier and later games were recorded off the OTA).

Yea I believe that is correct. Once it begins a recording successfully it won’t switch sources.

Correct, it is sticky to a tuner once the recording starts which allows it to continue recording the same file safely.
