Not sure it this was an omission or just not an option. When a show is currently recording on the guide. I click on it and get the option to start watching from the beginning or watch now. I am unable to go out of this menu back to the guide. I have to pick one of the options.

also, start from beginning doesn’t actually start at the beginning. It starts at the last point watched (as it should). And I think there should be a way to extend a recording the is currently recording to go past the originally set buffer. For example, I had set the Green Bay / Cowboys game to extend by 30 minutes. But the last field goal which determined the win was at about 32 minutes past the scheduled end of the game.
This has been resolved. There’s now a Cancel option which enables the menu button to let you back out of the modal. This fix is on the current Testflight Beta, and has been submitted to the App Store with version 2.1.8.
This has been added to the new Tesflight Beta. You can now edit currently recording/scheduled recordings from the Apple TV app by clicking the Options button when you bring up the recording modal.
