Backing up all content via Synology Drive

Hi all,

First off want to say how much I love Channels! I was able to get rid of 8 WMC pcs and change over to Fire sticks and Apple TVs and no more BSOD. My family and I are eternally grateful. Hopefully my question has a simple answer. I recently installed the Synology Drive client app on the Channels DVR server and set up a daily task to incrementally back up the entire DVR folder (Database, Logs, Movies, TV, etc) to a Synology NAS. Figured this would be good insurance if the DVR server goes down. My problem is that the backup process seems to cause Channels to shut down and it needs to be manually restarted. I wasn't sure what the cause was but today when I checked, Channels was up and the status page shows that it's been up since it started at 4:36am, which is when the backup task finished. Is there a better way to backup all the content? Maybe a Windows task to shutdown Channels and then start it after the backup process completes?

If you are backing it up to your Synology why not simply run the DVR there ?

What does the Log tab of the DVR show around the time the backup was occurring?

It is unexpected that the DVR would shut down during this process..

There's nothing in the Log folder other than the Comskip and Recording folders. Both appear to be normal. Is there somewhere else to look?

I tried running on one of my Synology NAS's previously. It was very slow and streaming quality suffered. Since I had so many HTPCs running WMC previously I repurposed one and it works wonderfully.

On the DVR web UI there is a Log tab where the DVR logs are shown.

Oh, gotcha. Never noticed that before. Here's what the log says between last night and this morning:

Synology Drive client backup task started at 4:00am and ended at 04:35:21am

Seems like it or something else is forcibly killing the DVR server. When shut down gracefully it will log a "Goodbye" message, which I'm not seeing..

I changed the backup task start time from 2:00a to 4:00a yesterday to see if that had any effect. The only thing that was different was that Channels restarted automatically. The past couple of times I had to restart it manually.

Are you running Channels DVR in the system tray or as a service?

Whatever the default install option is. I believe system tray; it doesn’t start automatically with windows boot. I need to click on the icon.
