Backup/Restore - Permission Denied Moving ChannelsDVRdata?

I am trying to move a backup of ChannelsDVRdata to another nas.
On synology NAS1 i copied all the data from ChannelsDVRdata to another folder.
It is this folder i am trying copy, this folder is also a shared CIFS folder.

I have tried:

  1. using the CP command to copy this folder to NAS2 (where the folder is a mounted CIFS drive on NAS2).
  2. accessing the backup folder from a windows machine to copy locally to windows

In both cases i am getting permissions denied when copying ChannelsDVRdata/Logs/comskip/1/video.mpg

I suspect this is because its a symbolic link to the original recordings.

Thing is i can copy the recordings themselves just fine.

Questions:

  1. Do i need the logs/comskip directory for the backup and restore or can i, ahem, skip it?
  2. If i do need it, how do i copy this correctt?

Note the compskip symbolic link has the same permissions as all other files, which i can copy just fine

You can skip the symlinks or you can skip the comskip logs completely

thanks, will do

ok got it copied across, small issue - there is no way to know which backup file to use - cause they now all have same timestamp - can i suggest a new feature where restore shows the date and time based on the filename?

Delete all of them and just copy the backup you want to restore from

My solution was to delete all but the latest based on file name.

This experience was subpar for another reason. Although it imported the database it didn’t import the recordings. It shouldn’t assume I want to keep recordings etc in the backup location, i has to manually move all recordings to get it to work. This backup/restore process needs more love and attention - even if it’s just docs.

For example if the docs had said to move all folders to the working location of the destination DVR that would have stopped a lot of poke-n-hope

Sure, but pretty silly experience for backup and restore when following the documentation that doesn’t mention any of this. As it is I still think I managed to only restore n-1 database file, not sure why, I did a save backup before I started any of this but the last 2 recordings are missing in the database. That doesn’t matter in my case, and I still have the files. I will figure out later what the issue was (like I deleted the wrong backup from today or if it was something else). Tl;dr got everything across, the docs assuming everyone has a USB drive and is moving it is unhelpful to misleading. That’s ok for open source projects, not paid subscription products.

And my guide is totally effed up for hd home run prime channels.

From the web UI: Settings > Guide Database > Maintenance > Delete and Recreate Database. Also, make sure your DVR's clock is correct, and set to the right timezone.

Thanks! I already just removed the provider and re-added it. It is rebuilding guide data and seems like my choice means I will have to manually re-add to favorite channels group. Will give the rebuild a try. All the TVE guide data was ok. Date and time is always right on my two NAS, have my own time server.

@racameron i tried the rebuild and here is where things stand:

  1. yes i restored the right database (the one i saved after all recordings had been made and 5 mins before migration)
  2. it didn't reclaim any of the recordings in these dirs - the files are still there, but they don't show up in the recorded shows or movies (is it possible these are deleted items?)
  3. Favourites in the web interface is 100% correct, it is not correct in the app - i am unclear why there is a difference.

Web

vs
app

That's possible. It's also possible the folders may be empty.

Clients maintain their own list of favorite/disabled channels from the server. The solution to ensuring that all devices have channel lists in sync is to use Channel Collections.

thanks, yes it turned out 12 files were indeed deleted items, i should have thought to empty trash before moving (another suggested edit to the how to if tmm is till watching  )

hmm that was my experience before, so not sure what i did before - time to look in the forced client settings set i used when i set this up OR i am utterly mistaken what my experience was, lol.

thanks for your help and patience, appreciate it.
