Best setting for ATV - Dolby Vision?

For some reason, my Apple TV asked if I wanted to use Dolby Vision. I said yes. But I notice that there is a pause/black screen momentarily whenever I start/stop watching a video on Channels. I guess it is switching to non-Dolby?

All channels content is SDR. IMO, the best Apple TV setting is 4k SDR. And then turn on Match Content for Range & Frame Rate. This will give the best picture for Channels and enable you to switch in and out of channels without black screens. It will also automatically switch to HDR or Dolby Vision if you play content on a different app that uses it. And then switch back to 4k SDR when done, providing the best Channels experience.

Thanks. I guessed correctly since I did set it just as you explained and it is working just as you explained. Thanks!

I ran into the same problem but wanted to add this only occurs when my ATV is connected to my Phillips Hue. A direct connection to the LG from ATV with a high quality cable works fine with no black screens.

huh? We were talking about a dynamic range change for the Channels ATV app. And how to stop the change (which has a brief delay on some TVs) so that there is only a switch to HDR when playing HDR content. And this was already resolved back in April of 2021. I didn't know Phillips Hue made TVs. It's nice that your LG HDR TV switches dynamic range and frame rate faster. But this is about avoiding the switch altogether for users while watching the primary app of Channels, and then have the TV switch for the occasional viewing of HDR stuff in other apps like Netflix or Prime. It is a better experience if your TV takes a second to do the switch.

Please check into Phillips Hue and I think you will understand, but based on your reply I will look elsewhere.

If you said "Hue Sync Box" it might be more helpful. Most people see "Hue" and think "light bulbs"

Based on your original question (and the OP's) - i think the answer may be to run 4K SDR with match framerate / range on. This will allow for non-channels sources to flip on DV/HDR when needed, but avoid multiple handshakes (which I'm guessing your syncbox is hacking up a bit on).

Apple stupidly names turning on 4k full-time as "Enable HDR" or "Enable Dolby Vision", which confuses everyone. You don't need it on full-time to be "enabled"
