BEST ways to connect remotely for live TV (Sup3rb0wl!)

New to Channels, WMC refugee. Among other things I want to be able to watch live TV remotely.

I have an HDHomeRun Dual, and the Channels DVR running on an Intel Mac Mini at home. I want to watch the big game at a remote location that has residential (cable) internet using an Apple TV 4K.

Apparently I can connect in several different ways. I'm confused about what way will yield the fastest most stable connection. Or, if several will be equally fast/stable, what's the easiest?

  • direct > home IP address (stable) > port forward to server (Mac Mini)?

  • in-app "Away from Home" option on the remote/client Chanels app on ATV?

  • Tailscale > Channels DVR built-in Tailscale?

  • Tailscale > the Mac Mini Tailscale target?

  • Tailscale > another Apple TV at home running as an exit node/subnet > Channels DVR Server on Mac Mini?

I already have many ports forwarded, RDP, VNC. Prolly not very secure but for short term, I up for more of that.

Thanks for anyone's help!

None of those approaches will be any bette than each other.

The only thing that matters is the upload speed of the source and the download speed where you are. And of course, the stability of the network of each.

The easiest way is to use our built in remote streaming. You can find more info on it in our documentation.

I was wary of involving transcoding or intermediate (internet) servers.

My head is spinning with all the getchannels/reddit/etc. search/forum/etc. windows I have open, can you provide a link to that documentation?

Thanks again in advance.

These are the same thing and what we recommend.

Tailscale is useful for ISPs that don't allow port forwarding. Doesn't matter how you install it.

This is nonsense.
