BETA: Enhanced Commercial Detection

Thank you for doing this. News is our lowest category for edits. Getting more for this unique show layout will help us make it better.

Is it wrong, really? :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

I submitted dozens of edits for my local news and ABC World News but recently gave up because I wasn’t seeing any improvements. It’s become too difficult to submit edits because of the way the editor groups segments together. It’s not “specific” enough and I didn’t want to submit bad edits when both the show and commercials are grouped together.

@sdschramm thanks for your help! every bit helps and I'll be releasing a new model that incorporates those changes when I get a chance.

As for the situations where the cut points aren't right: it's definitely something we understand is an issue and would like to improve in the future.

Back in January 2026, a thread was posted about Enhanced Commercial Detection available for users to test in beta. It was pretty active for a while, but the thread closed on 6/20/26 because 30 days had past without any new replies and there is no way to re-open it.

My server is showing Version 2026.04.07.1758 as the latest, which appears to be from April 2026. I wanted to check in and see if any development was still been made on this, or if the project was scrapped?

Actually, v2026.06.29.0212 is the latest stable release

Your server should have automatically updated to that version

To clarify, I'm running 2026.06.29.0212 as the server version, but the Enhanced Detection version is 2026.04.07.1758

You are running the latest commercial detection

It's still active. It will only have updates if newer versions of the model perform better than the currently released one.

A new model has been released as 2026.07.11.1415 . You can update to it by clicking the Check For Updates button on Enhanced Detection .

Awesome, my server has already updated to 2026.07.11.1415. Hopefully this improves reliability with my news recordings. If not, I'll send more edits. Thanks.

The latest Enhanced Commercial Detection version is not as good as the previous version for me. I've recorded 2 shows today and both have commercials in a show block. Unable to separate them.

Previous version worked better although some commercial segments were showing as a show block. I can live with that but having commercials in show blocks now defeats the purpose. How can I revert back to the previous model?

Never mind, I have another server recording the same shows as backup and it's still on the previous version. I see the same issue. So the latest version is probably not causing it. Probably just the how it's detecting todays recordings. Will see tomorrow's recordings do.

“Segmenting” (the part of the process that decides where the edges between the blocks) comes from comskip (the non-Enhanced Commercial Detection). Any changes to the Enhanced Commercial Detection will not improve or hurt how that works. We understand there are situations where it isn’t perfect, but so far we’ve been unable to come up with any strategies to improve it.

I’ve been attempting to edit and correct commercials again, but I’ve given up due to the limitations of the segmentation system. It constantly groups the show and ads into the same block, making my edits useless because I either miss the show or include ads. What are the next steps to improve or replace the segmentation system?

We've been working on improving this for a while and recently found something that may improve some of these situations (my early spot checks have been positive of some of the instances that were previously not segmented well).

You can try out the latest DVR pre-release and re-detect commercials for recordings you were having trouble with and then edit the commercials again to see if it does any better.

If this does have positive results, there is a second phase we'll be rolling out soon that will require re-fingerprinting existing recordings, but should provide more progress in this regard.

How does this process work, on re-edit or re-run detection?

The re-fingerprinting will happen during the nightly process (when nothing else is active on the DVR).
