Never mind, I have another server recording the same shows as backup and it's still on the previous version. I see the same issue. So the latest version is probably not causing it. Probably just the how it's detecting todays recordings. Will see tomorrow's recordings do.
“Segmenting” (the part of the process that decides where the edges between the blocks) comes from comskip (the non-Enhanced Commercial Detection). Any changes to the Enhanced Commercial Detection will not improve or hurt how that works. We understand there are situations where it isn’t perfect, but so far we’ve been unable to come up with any strategies to improve it.
I’ve been attempting to edit and correct commercials again, but I’ve given up due to the limitations of the segmentation system. It constantly groups the show and ads into the same block, making my edits useless because I either miss the show or include ads. What are the next steps to improve or replace the segmentation system?
We've been working on improving this for a while and recently found something that may improve some of these situations (my early spot checks have been positive of some of the instances that were previously not segmented well).
You can try out the latest DVR pre-release and re-detect commercials for recordings you were having trouble with and then edit the commercials again to see if it does any better.
If this does have positive results, there is a second phase we'll be rolling out soon that will require re-fingerprinting existing recordings, but should provide more progress in this regard.

How does this process work, on re-edit or re-run detection?
The re-fingerprinting will happen during the nightly process (when nothing else is active on the DVR).

fwiw, I've been happy with the enhanced commercial detection, and the last few days even my custom placeholder news recordings seem very accurate. 
un-scientific of course, and yes, the deep processing is slow (hence the 30min placeholders)
I do want to flag for your attention however that we are entering a season where commercial detection may work too well on news/talk shows when they play a political ad to talk about. I've caught this a few times this week where they talk about an ad and then play it, so commercial skip kicks in, but it's minimum cut time is longer than the little clip they play.
Glad to hear the segmenting is working better.
The more times you can submit edits with corrections to these sorts of things, the better the model should become at understanding this nuance.

A new model version 2026.07.29.1901 has been published that incorporates the latest edits that have been published. You will have to be on a DVR pre-release from the past week to be able to update to it.
I'm on 2026.07.27.2037, and it won't update. No big deal for me, but I thought it might be a useful FYI for you.
@jkr4m3r Please submit diagnostics. To be clear, you're on DVR version 2026.07.27.2037 and when you go to Settings -> Live TV & DVR and scroll down to Commercial Detection and tap the Check For Update under Enhanced Detection (which you have enabled), it does not update?
Nono, I thought it was to update the entire server. I had commercial detection off while I sort out performance issues on my ancient server box. I just went and turned it on and will give it a whirl if I can find something to record that interests me.
It did update, I just misunderstood your post.

How do we add a commercial break when it's not in the web UI editor? That's probably a dumb question I'm sure.
Also it would be awesome in the editor if the times were displayed as hh:mm:ss instead of number of seconds, so you could easily match it up with the timeline by watching it. Would make it a lot easier to add a commercial break that was skipped for example.
One other thing when you get a chance, take a look at a random baseball game on MLB Network. None of the commercials are ever flagged from what I can see because the MLB banner runs continuously throughout the entire program even during commercials. I don't think this is the only network that does that but there are score boxes that could be used to figure out when a commercial comes on.

Thanks, took a look at that and it's probably too much work for what I want to do, which is to mark commercials in sports recordings so that I can get them submitted to channels and improve the detect rate. These are all watch and delete so after I watch them I could add commercials or re-mark them to help out.
I think if the web commercial editor was changed to show hours minutes and seconds, you could bring up a recording after you watch it (in the channels client) and quickly scrub through and add all the blocks on the web UI just by doing splits in the segments. Something like adding the ability to change the horizontal segment lines or add lines that you can move up or down. I'm not sure how hard this would be to add to the web UI but it would be a lot easier for us for those missed blocks.
We don’t have a way to do that, but we’ve improved the segmenter in recent builds.
If that doesn’t work, we don’t currently have anything to make it better, but understand this is an issue in some cases.
That's unfortunate, one of my common problems with sports events is that commercials are not flagged at all. In fact I just got done watching the women's British Open on USA Network and very few commercials were flagged. I'm running a relatively recent pre-release from July 26 so it had some of the improvements, but without a way to easily add in missed segments there's no way for me to help out the detection.
