Better client buffer maintenance

Can we have a matching buffer on the server while the client is watching? This way if a user decides to record, the recording could start at the beginning of the show. It would also remove the client buffer size restrictions.

Funny, I was just thinking the other day that it would be nice if - When I hit record half way through a show, the first part that I have already watched (which is in the client buffer) could transfer to the DVR and it would record the full show. I even tried an experiment to see if it already does this, but obviously it does not.

The way Chanels DVR is designed this is not possible. I too would like this.

The buffer is broken up into little pieces and is not a continuous file.

It would also be nice if the buffer would keep running until a new channel is selected (without PIP).

Transferring data back to the server is quite an undertaking and a bad design. What if the client watches live an already transcoded program? The server sees the original stream in case of network sources and HDHR sources if tuner sharing is enabled. Watching could mean recording to a temporary buffer which, upon user action, could be saved as an actual recording beginning at the program start.

I agree SageTV does this seamlessly it treats livetv the same way it treats a recording ... If I start watching LiveTV and an hour into the show I want to keep the whole show all I do is hit record ... and anybody that jumps in to watch the show will see the full show from when I started watching.... If you are done watching LiveTV it will delete it after a short period of time unless you hit record.

Instead of tuner Sharing SageTV does Stream sharing all the time.

I do not see where the disagreement is.

Yeah I thought about it after I disagreed and I think we both are on the same track. Changed to agree.
