Recently some of my DVR recordings are not recording properly. Two that I have noticed which I made passes for are Conan and ATP tennis. After the recording is complete when I play the episode the recording scrub bar will show anywhere between 2000 minutes to 5000 minutes recorded. There are no commercials detected either. The episode will start to play, but if I scrub I only get the spinning wheel. It is only happening with selective shows though. I am using a Synology DS916+ with Channels DVR version 2017.03.31.2134. What is interesting is when I log into my NAS to look at the recorded length of those shows it is similar to the ones that recorded and play properly.
How long are those recordings actually?
What program did you use on the NAS to play them?
Maybe you can upload one to google drive if it’s not too big and share with me so I can check it out?
I have seen this behavior—length being a VERY large number of minutes and no commercial detection, but the timeline fixed itself while playing the recording (perhaps after a minute or two). I’ve seen this perhaps twice, the last time was just a few days ago.
Edit: the recording plays just fine (I didn’t try scrubbing).
I’ve seen it too, but restarting the Channels app fixed it.
I had this today too
I am using my Apple TV to play the recordings. The files are 16GB. The same size as the other recording that are playing correctly. I have restarted my Apple TV with the same issue.
Anyone willing to share a problematic recording?
I will see if one of the rescordings is a more manageable file size and upload it to google drive.
It is quite the pain to move these huge files around. If you feel comfortable giving me temporary SSH access instead, I can do some basic analysis remotely and cut out a few MB sample of the problem area to avoid all the time wasted moving the entire thing around.
happy to do that if you tell me how
Basically, you would need to:
- enable SSH access on your mac (“Remote Login” under “Sharing” preferences)
- setup a port forwarding rule on your router, like port 2242 -> ip-of-mac:22
- DM me your IP address, and the username/password to login (along with the name of the recording)
@czakhary sent me a sample recording yesterday. In his case, the cable company is sending video in a way that’s documented in the specification, but very rare (I’ve never seen it before).
I would be very surprised if others are seeing the same issue, so I’m curious to get some more samples to compare.
There’s also an easy way to get metadata about a recording from the DVR, which would tell me right away if it’s the same issue as the sample I got already. (Find the recording on the web UI, right click on the preview image and copy url, paste the url into new window and change “preview.jpg” at the end to “mediainfo.json”. Save the json to a file and PM to me.)
@jkline Do you still have any recordings which have this issue?
@tmm1. In my case, and I think for at least some others, the recording played fine. It was just the visual with the timeline and then the timeline corrected itself as it was playing. Others have said it correcting by restarting the ATV app. I think want, I fixed it just by exiting the show and playing it again. This doesn’t sound like the same issue as the scrubbing issue, but I didn’t try scrubbing.
BTW, I’m OTA.
I’m looking for any sample OTA recording which shows a broken timeline with very large number of minutes. If you have such a recording, please upload it to google/microsoft drive and send me a link.
