Same behavior on multiple ATV’s. When a show ends and I hit the menu button to go back to the recordings menu it always goes to the settings screen. Once on the settings screen it does not always show the DVR options on the top row. In order to get them back I have to double click the home button, swipe up on the app to kill it and then restart the app.
Strangely, I haven’t seen this behaviour at the end of a show but if the screen saver kicks in pressing a button to clear it puts me on the settings page as well reguardless of what page it was on beforehand. I haven’t lost the DVR though.
I also lose the connection to the DVR from the Apple TV app. Rebooting the app as described above works sometimes, but not always for me.
Overall, I couldn’t be more happier with the DVR product. The developers have done a fantastic job! Thank you so much. Goodbye TiVo and it’s 20 year old UI.
$8/month is a great deal for such fine work.

The DVR specific tabs are made to show up when it detects Channels DVR on your network, and to hide when it doesn’t see it anymore.
There may be some bugs causing Channels DVR to look as missing to the Apple TV app.
