Camera suggestions

Looking to get recommendations from the community when it comes to surveillance cameras that play well together with channels m3u/hls integration. Cameras that don’t have subscriptions and have good image quality. I’ve been looking at ubuiquti protect line, so anyone have any experience with unifi? @racameron I’ve noticed you topography is heavy in unifi, are you using any cameras? Thanks

Wyze + https://github.com/mrlt8/docker-wyze-bridge is one option.

Thanks I’ll check out some wyze cameras. Is there a certain protocol or anything they need to support or do all wyze cameras work with the docker linked above. I’m new to camera stuff

That docker turns it into regular M3U which is compatible with Channels. I bought a couple Wyze v3 and was impressed with the quality for the price. The color night mode is quite impressive too.

Is their base station needed or will the docker and cameras be all that is needed to feed channels? Probably around 5-6 cameras

Yes, I have Protect cameras. You can get their RTSP URLs from the settings of each camera. But I don't use them in Channels: instead I use Homebridge for getting the cameras on the TV, and the Protect app for my devices.

So channels and cameras will play well together with those RTSP URLs? Would I be correct in assuming I would stil need to run protect software controller to get to those settings? Or could I skip protect if I’m only using the cameras with channels. Obviously I would need protect running if I choose to use unifi app. Lastly would you choose protect cameras again if you had a do over? Unifi stuff has always been solid for me. Thanks for your input.

I use amcrest cameras for my outdoor security. I use blue iris for the dvr functionality but I use the cameras direct rtsp url in channels for each camera. What is really nice is that they make a video doorbell and they expose the rtsp feed that channels can use directly as well. Saved me from having to mount a camera on my porch.

Thanks for the suggestion. These sound like they should be pretty easy to deploy. Plug them in enter the urls into channels and done. Correct? I’ll put these on the list to check out

Are you running any amcrest 4k cameras? If so any issues with 4k direct into channels? Looks like they have a nice selection of 4k poe. Might have a front runner with unifi

No, you need Protect running on a Dream Machine, Cloud Key 2+, or NVR. The cameras are not standard ONVIF cameras; they only work with the Protect software.

(Protect cannot run on a random PC like the network controller can.)

Understood thank you

Yeah they are 4k. Look really good too. You just have to build the custom channel and put the urls in. No monthly fee or anything either

I personally have had a hard time getting my protect cameras into Channels. Every time I try to put in the rtsp stream directly into the config window it tells me that rtsp format isn't supported.
