Most DVR solutions will generally work like this:
- Run on Server/Always-on-PC
- Record to storage on that Server/Always-on-PC
- Need to be able to “talk” to other devices on the network using a specified port [can’t have that port blocked by the firewall]
- Network fast enough to stream the recorded DVR’d show to the client
The Channels DVR when it launches will be similar. When you pause live TV, that will use the storage on the Apple TV. When you play something that’s been recorded, it will play from the Server/Always-on-PC to the Apple TV. Your network needs to be good enough for the recorded file to get streamed, so that’s definitely a consideration as well.
When you see it on the Apple TV, there’s going to be nothing that shows it’s not on the Apple TV, it’s just something that happens in the background. It should look just like any other DVR solution where you go to the DVR section and choose what you want to watch, and it will play.
