If I buy a 6TB external hard drive for my iMac, can I tell the DVR to only use 3TB of space or will it just fill the entire thing up with shows?
There is no way to limit space. When you create season passes, you can specify how many episodes to keep so that old or watched episodes are automatically deleted.
Gotcha. But what happens if the drive runs out of space with the current recording settings? Will the DVR delete the oldest programs to make space or will it just stop recording any new programs?
It will stop working correctly. This is an area where need to improve, to delete automatically. We could probably also add a configuration option to specify your own limit like you suggested above. It’s a good idea.
Partition the drive. That way the drive will have two letters (ie: D: and E:). That way you can use half the drive for Channels DVR and the other half for whatever you want.
Hey guys:) Just checking in on the ability to set maximum storage size or auto-delete old recordings. Are either of those features possible yet, or is partitioning a drive the best option to limit storage size? I’m going to be setting up the dvr on a Mac Mini. Thanks!!
Any update on this? I’ve been using the partition workaround, but it’s not ideal. Unfortunately once you set your partitions, you can end up with too much space for the DVR and not enough for Mac system files (and updates), or too little space for the DVR…and with a Mac, resizing the main Macintosh HD volume can be pretty difficult. Having an option to limit the DVR storage size would solve the issue and be the most efficient distribution of space.
