Cannot connect to DVR with Android devices

I have installed Channels DVR on my Synology NAS and have successfully used it with Fire TV devices on my network.

I've installed the app on my Android phone and tablet and I'm running into problems on both devices. The app starts and tries to locate the DVR. It seems to find the DVR on the network, but can't connect to it. I get a message that says:
Welcome to Channels DVR
Your DVR is not quite set up yet.
Visit this URL in your browser to complete it:
http://192.168.1.10:8089

The IP address in the URL is the correct IP address of the NAS. When I type the URL on a computer browser, I am taken to the Channels DVR interface. However, entering the URL on a browser on the Android phone or tablet will time out. So, it seems like I can't connect to the NAS using the browser on the Android phone or tablet.

I realize this may not be an issue specific to Channels DVR. It looks like there is something with the configuration of either the NAS or the Android devices that is preventing the browser and the Channels DVR app from connecting to the NAS.

I welcome any ideas for me to try. I am at my wits end.

Thanks and blessings.

Guest wifi, or maybe setting on your Wi-Fi router preventing devices from communicating with each other?

Thank you for the suggestion in troubleshooting the WiFi and suggesting the router. It led me down a rather interesting troubleshooting path.

  • I disconnected one of the Fire TVs from Ethernet and ran it on WiFi - it had the same error as the tablets.
  • I installed a network utility app on the tablet and tried pinging the NAS. No joy with the ping, but a network scan showed the NAS on the network. I could also ping other devices from the tablet.
  • I tried the same thing with a laptop. There were no problems pinging the NAS if the laptop was connected by ethernet, but had problems pinging the NAS on WiFi.
  • WiFi devices could not connect or ping the NAS. I suspected a router problem. Tried rebooting the router - no change.
  • I was using dynamic port aggregation to connect 2 ethernet ports from the router to the 2 ethernet ports of the NAS. I was wondering if there was some issue with the port aggregation in the router that was preventing WiFi connections to the NAS. (I admit, that's a shot in the dark.) I reconfigured the port aggregation on the NAS and Router to use static port aggregation rather than dynamic.
  • I could now ping the NAS from WiFi devices. I tried the Channels app on the Android tablet and phone and it now connects successfully to the DVR server on the NAS.

I would conclude it is a router issuer. I'll report it to Netgear.
